Excerpt from The Anatomy of Pattern There was a time in my own struggling for artistic existence, when I should have been so grateful for any practical teaching in ornament, that I fancy there must be students who will find it helpful to have set plainly before them what I have had to puzzle out for myself Hence this series of d104 Books of Ornamental Design; in which I have amplified and illustrated the substance of a series of Cantor Lectures delivered in December last before the Society of Arts. I have assumed no great amount of technical or artistic knowledge on the part of the reader only that he wants to know. And, elementary as my subject is, I have taken some pains to save him all unnecessary effort in following my meaning. The illustrations are to be taken literally as illustrations, and not by any means considered as ornamental addenda to the book. Excerpt from Pattern Design: A Book for Students Treating in a Practical Way of the Anatomy, Planning Evolution of Repeated Ornament A man has a right, I suppose, to pull down the building he once put up, and to raise another in' its place. If he should see fit to use sometimes the very stones which belonged to it, he would only be stealing from himself. I have done something very much like that. In the course of the last fifteen years the times have changed, and with them the standpoint of students and teachers of design; and, though my point of View has not altered, my outlook has widened with experience. When it came to the revision of The Anatomy of Pattern with a View to a fifth edition, it seemed to me I had done all I could do to it, that it was past mending, and that the simplest thing would be to start afresh. The present volume, however, though it covers the ground of the former one, and answers much the same purpose, is not the same, but really a new book upon the foundations of the old one. It contains, indeed, all that was in the other, but otherwise expressed. Here and there an explanation or description, which, by revision after revision, had been reduced to the fewest and plainest words I could find, has been allowed to stand. '80 with the illustrations, the greater number of them are new. Such of the old diagrams as were essential to the purpose of the book have been drawn again, not merely on the larger scale allowed by the page, but in a simpler and more self-explanatory way. Excerpt from d104-Book of Anatomy The gratifying reception given to the d104-book of Anatomy, not only in this country but also in America, has rendered it necessary to prepare a new edition. In carrying out this work the whole book has been carefully revised, and a large number of new illustrations have been added. The sections in which the chief changes and additions have been made are those upon Embryology, the Joints, the Muscles, the Brain and Spinal Cord, the Genito -Urinary Organs, the Lymphatics, and Applied Anatomy. By pruning down in various directions, it has been found possible to incorporate a considerable amount of new matter in these and other sections without materially increasing the bulk of the book. The lamented death of Professor Birmingham was felt by all the contributors to be not only a personal loss, but one which materially affected an important section of the book. Although in very bad health. Professor Birmingham was desirous to undertake his share of the work, and he had the sheets on the Digestive System in his possession for this purpose when he died. There was probably no part of the book which required less revision than his, and the Editor has taken upon himself the duty of making the alterations which seemed essential. In doing this he has been careful to avoid unnecessary changes and to preserve throughout the original character of the article. In the section upon the Muscular System, a series of illustrations has been added in which the areas of muscle attachment are delineated upon the bones. For the preparation of the specimens, and for assistance in the mapping out of these areas, the Editor is indebted to Dr. E. B. Jamieson. Those who have attempted work of this kind will appreciate the amount of labour and judgment entailed, as it is only by taking the average condition in many specimens, and by the close study of the bones selected for the delineations, that a sufficiently accurate result can be attained. With the exception of the figures which have been added to the sections of the book dealing with Embryology, Osteology, and the Genito-Urinary Organs, the many new illustrations which appear in this edition have been prepared in the Anatomical Department of the University of Edinburgh.
