A preprototype (brassboard model) Infrared Temperature Profile Radiometer (ITPR) was tested on the NASA Convair-990 aircraft expedition during June 1970. The objectives of the airborne ITPR experiment were to obtain data to test various techniques planned for deriving temperature soundings from spaceborne ITPR measurements and to specify the transmission characteristics of the atmosphere and clouds. This paper describes the instrument and shows various results obtained from the airborne measurements.

Vertical cross-sections of temperature between 60°S and 50°N for Apr. 6, 1973, are derived from (a) radiosonde, (b) Nimbus-5 Infrared Temperature Profile Radiometer, Nimbus-E Microwave Spectrometer and Selective Chopper Radiometer, and (c) NOAA-2 Vertical Temperature Profile Radiometer (VTPR) data. Comparisons are made of the level temperatures and latitudinal temperature gradients, geopotential heights and the latitudinal gradients, and geostrophic winds inferred from the radiosonde and satellite cross-sections. The results of this limited case study indicate: 1. Temperature accuracies for the lower troposphere obtained with Nimbus-5 sounding data are superior to those achieved with the NOAA-2 VTPR data. 2. The agreement between latitudinal gradients of temperature derived from satellite data and radiosonde observations is much better than the agreement between level temperatures obtained from satellite and radiosonde observations. 3. The geostrophic wind distribution of jet streams derived from satellite data possesses more character and intensity than does the geostrophic wind distribution obtained from radiosonde data.

Radiometric observations have been made from aircraft with spacecraft prototype instruments to test satellite remote sensing techniques. At the same time these observations have been used to study the problem of remote sensing from aircraft because of its own particular value in providing data in the support of sub-synoptic scale meteorological experiments such as the forthcoming GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment. This paper describes aircraft radiometric methods of obtaining clear column radiances, vertical temperature profiles, total precipitable water, and cloud heights and amounts. Questions regarding vertical resolution and accuracy specification as a function of aircraft altitudes are answered. Results obtained using observations made during June 1970 with prototype versions of the Nimbus-E ITPR aboard the NASA CV-990 are presented and discussed. It is concluded that multi-spectral radiometers aboard an aircraft can be effective meteorological observing tools.

A verification procedure is applied to determine the accuracy of the Satellite Infrared Spectrometer (SIRS) B temperature retrievals by measuring their usefulness in the context of the National Meteorological Center (Suitland, Md.) operations. Three pressure levels are considered. It is shown that temperatures derived from satellite data for application at 200 mb are definitely useful while at 500 and 300 mb, under certain cloud conditions, the SIRS temperatures are moderately useful.
