Book Description
This book is not intended to provide a list of the 100 ‘best’ books ever written and published by Punjabi authors. Given the sheer range of books written by Punjabi authors and the unpredictability of individual taste, any such definitive list is quite impossible. Secondly, the choice has been restricted to books that were written by them either in Punjabi, Hindi or Urdu but have been translated into English. Thus, personal choice restricted by availability has dictated this selection. The choice of books includes autobiographies, novels, short stories, poems, and plays. Research books, religious books, and books written originally in English have not been included. From the Introduction I am amazed at the scholarship, the passion and the love with which Paramjeet Singh has written this book. It will be a reference volume for all times. Nirupama Dutt Poet, Journalist & Translator Mr. Singh’s effort is commendable as he is making available some of the rarest of gems of Punjabi literature to the non-Punjabi readers. I congratulate Mr. Singh on putting together this selection and hope that non-Punjabi readers of this book would find new horizons of cultural experience opening up before them. Of course, for Punjabi readers, it may be yet another opportunity to experience a sense of genuine pride in their rich legacy of language, literature and culture. . Prof. Rana Nayar

The Adventures of SahebaN
Author: Fauzia Rafique
Publisher: Independently Published
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
In 1949, Simone de Beauvoir, author of The Second Sex, wrote: 'All oppression creates a state of war, this is no exception.' In The Adventures of Saheban, Fauzia Rafique has taken the principle, weaving this fundamental truth through the lives of four women. Saheban, heroine of a popular Pakistani folk story, rebels against her family, refusing an arranged marriage; Saheban, the weaponless Warrior, rebels against a male-dominated society; Ego Feathers is forced to write Saheban's biography in secret code; and Fauzia, oppressed by rampant sexism in her native country, embarks on a new life in a different country, only to experience further oppression in the guise of racism, and economic disparity. Stumbling across Saheban's biography, Fauzia cracks Ego Feathers code, ultimately (and hopefully) freeing herself from the chains that have bound her existence.

A Night for the Lady
Author: Joanne Arnott
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781553802501
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Poetry. Native American Studies. A NIGHT FOR THE LADY explores the terrain of poetry conversation. Each poem arises from conversations with poets, colleagues and intimate friends. They range from a 1998 conversation on healing programs and the fundamentals of world change to a sequence of recent indigenous literary events on the prairies. Within the context of these conversations, an exploration emerges of the roles of woman within local as well as historic literary and global situations. The poems draw together diverse figures from world literature, world religions and myths to lay open the experience of human beings within the "brown-feminine." Identifying and synthesizing connections across a wide palette of human experience, this collection challenges the divisions of personal and global, indigenous and "everyone else," all the while celebrating both the humanity and the divinity of the Lady. Playful, erotic and occasionally harrowing, this collection bundles together experimental and inspirational work from a longstanding voice of conscience in Canadian letters. Once again, Arnott carries us into the most intimate terrain, casts her net widely, catches us up.
