Book Description
The present supplement volume, A 7, is the first of a triad, A 5 to A 7, dealing with the chemical reactions of metallic tungsten. It describes the reactions with inorganic and organic compounds, except for formation reactions of organotungsten compounds. Volume A 6, to appear at the beginning of 1988, will cover the reactions of tungsten with metallic elements. Volume A 5, in preparation for 1988/89, will contain the reactions with nonmetallic elements and, in addition, cover the electrochemistry of tungsten. With the appearance of this last volume, the present knowledge of the chemistry of tungsten will be compiled in more than 1000 pages. In the Gmelin main volume on tungsten, published in 1933, the presentation of the information then available on the same subject required less than 6 pages. This enormous increase in relevant data over the last fifty years is stupefying, considering the fact that tungsten is a rather inert metal which is resistant to most chemical agents up to high temperatures. With afew exceptions,in fact, it was not so much the reactions of bulk tungsten which attracted the interest of the experimenters as the reactions taking place at its surface. This comes about for practical as well as scientific reasons.

Book Description
Auger electron spectroscopy is rapidly developing into the single most powerful analytical technique in basic and applied science.for investigating the chemical and structural properties of solids. Its ex plosive growth beginning in 1967 was triggered by the development of Auger analyzers capable of de tecting one atom layer of material in a fraction of a second. Continued growth was guaranteed firstly by the commercial availability of apparatus which combined the capabilities of scanning electron mi croscopy and ion-mill depth profiling with Auger analysis, and secondly by the increasing need to know the atomistics of many processes in fundamental research and engineering applications. The expanding use of Auger analysis was accompanied by an increase in the number of publications dealing with it. Because of the developing nature of Auger spectroscopy, the articles have appeared in many different sources covering diverse disciplines, so that it is extremely difficult to discover just what has or has not been subjected to Auger analysis. In this situation, a comprehensive bibliography is obviou-sly useful to those both inside and outside the field. For those in the field, this bibliography should be a wonderful time saver for locating certain references, in researching a particular topic, or when considering various aspects of instrumentation or data analysis. This bibliography not only provides the most complete listing of references pertinent to surface Auger analysis available today, but it is also a basis for extrapolating from past trends to future expectations.

Book Description
In this historical volume Salvatore Califano traces the developments of ideas and theories in physical and theoretical chemistry throughout the 20th century. This seldom-told narrative provides details of topics from thermodynamics to atomic structure, radioactivity and quantum chemistry. Califano’s expertise as a physical chemist allows him to judge the historical developments from the point of view of modern chemistry. This detailed and unique historical narrative is fascinating for chemists working in the fields of physical chemistry and is also a useful resource for science historians who will enjoy access to material not previously dealt with in a coherent way.

Influence of Crystal Plane and Surrounding Atmosphere on Chemical Activities of Single Crystals of Metals

Book Description
This document reports results of tests to study the influence of crystal planes of single crystals of 13 metals on the rates of five chemical processes important to the operation or manufacture of lubricated surfaces. These processes are oxidation in air, corrosion by oils, wetting of the surface by stearic acid with copper, nickel, and iron, rearrangement and roughening of the surface due to the action of hot gases, and electrochemical processes including deposition, etching, replacement, and in a few cases, galvanic action. The results, in general, show the process rates to vary with plane in different degrees, with greater differences between the chemical behavior of two planes of the same metal than between polycrystallie surfaces on two different metals being shown in some cases.
