Book Description
Excerpt from Text-Book of Geology, Vol. 2 HE phenomena of hypogene action considered in the T foregoing pages relate almost wholly to the effects produced at the surface. It is evident, however, that these phenomena chie y arise from movements within or beneath the earth's crust, and must be accompanied by very considerable internal changes in the rocks which form that crust. These rocks, subjected to enormous pressure, have been contorted, crumpled, and folded back upon themselves, as if thousands of feet of solid limestones, sandstones, and shales had been merely a few layers of carpet; they have been shattered and fractured; they have in some places been pushed far above their original position, in others depressed far beneath it: so great has been the compression which they have undergone that their com ponent particles have in many places been rearranged, and even crystallized. They have here and there probably been reduced to actual fusion, and have been abundantly invaded by masses of molten rock from below. In the present section, the student is asked to consider (503) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Book Description
Excerpt from Applied Geology, Vol. 2 The difficulty of writing a book from the apparently opposite points of view of theory and practice is obvious; but when this apparent opposition is based upon mis taken views as to the relative importance of each, this difficulty is at least some excuse for the attempt to reconcile them. Book Description
Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 2 of 3 Exceptional attention is given to the evolutions of faunas and floras and to their radiations and migrations, while less attention is given to the unrelated features Of the life, however bizarre these may be in themselves. The familiar calling Of the biological roll Under each period is abandoned, and will perhaps be missed; but it has been thought that the mutations of the assemblages of composite life of the great provinces that arose in succession from changes in geographic configuration, are more important as elements in the history of the earth's inhabitants than the classification of life forms as such, par ticularly as such classification is still in a state of transition. The order of treatment of the various forms of life in the several periods is varied according to what is conceived to be their historical impor tance or natural relations. Excerpt from Geology, Introductory, Descriptive, and Practical, Vol. 2 of 2 Nor is this all. The wide and marked distinction that exists between the general character and appearance of those groups of animals whose remains are found fossil in Secondary rocks and those of a more recent date, is scarcely less remarkable than the fact of the introduction of so many new species and genera. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Theoretical and Practical; Stratigraphical Geology and Palaeontology I have only to add, with my esteemed colleague in his preface to Vol. I., that the changes necessary to bring the science of the last generation into harmony with current knowledge and thought, have been more serious than were anticipated when the revision began. This volume has been entirely re-written, and differs in construction and detail from any known manual; it is hoped that every page will repay the student, if read with care and patience. The Palaeontological analyses through the general text, as well as the tabular deductions, are for the first time fully prepared for English students.
