Excerpt from d104 Book of a Course of Lectures, on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 2: For the Use of the Medical Students of Harvard University As 'the first part of this text book relates to the general theory of medicine, this second part may. Be considered as relating to the practice. This distinction 19 made, however, rather 1n reference to the title of the professorship I hold, and to the duties belonging to it, than to the exact character of the two parts of the work. The second palt is represented as relating to practice, because it will describe particular diseases, and the treatment adapted to each; yet it will admit and require many theoretical discussions. Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 1 of 2 IT was not foreseen by the American contributor to these Lectures, that his additions would have constituted, in a comparatively short period, the larger part of the entire work. His proportion is, now, upwards of fourteen hundred pages - enough, in amount of matter and variety of topic, to form a separate treatise one as large, if not as comprehensive, as some systems of medicine which find willing and instructed readers. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic IN yielding to the wish of the publishers that he would become annotator to the Lectures of Doctor Stokes, and make additions on subjects not included in the course of the distinguished lecturer in the Park Street Medical School, the editor was not unmindful of the responsibility of his task, nor of the comparisons to which his labours would be subjected by critical readers. Mere self-regard would have made him prefer to be the author of a separate work on the Practice of Medicine; in which scope would have been allowed him for various topics necessarily omitted on the present occasion. But he was consoled by the reflexion, that, next to the pleasure of original promulgation of sound precepts Of doctrine and practice by oneself, is that of bearing corroborative testimony to emanations ofthis nature from another person. Book Description
Excerpt from The Elements of Physics, Vol. 1 of 3: A College Text-Book; Mechanics and Heat The beginner in Physics, if he is to be well taught, must study a text-book which contains concise statements of physical laws and a systematic development of principles. He must attend lectures or demonstrations in which the phenomena are shown, and finally he must enter the laboratory and make physical measurements. The present book deals only with the first part of this triple course of instruction. It differs in certain respects from many books which have been written for beginners. Descriptions of the numerous phenomena with which it is necessary for the student to become acquainted have been largely omitted; the assumption being that the study of the text will always be accompanied by, and indeed be supplementary to, a course of carefully arranged and fully illustrated lectures. A knowledge of the elements of the calculus, the natural language of physics, has been taken for granted, but the degree of mathematical experience of the undergraduate reader, necessarily limited, has been kept in view and the various proofs and the demonstra tions have been given the simplest possible form. The concepts of directed and of distributed quantity, which are no less important to the student of physics than are the methods of the calculus, are briefly treated in Chapter II. Of Volume I. And in Chapter I. Of Volume II., respectively, and are used upon occasion throughout the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 1 of 2 The object of the science of medicine is the prevention and the cure of diseases. Though the noxious agents which surround us are numer ous, yet nature supplies, in some measure, the means of preventing and curing their bad effects. Thus the exhalations from putrefying animal matter produce fever; and their disagreeable and horrible stench is a sufficient warning to avoid them: if fever has taken place from this cause, the delirium, and the morbid heat of skin which attend it, inspire an instinctive disposition to plunge into cold water; and the relief produced by it is immediate, and generally certain.
