Book Description
I would encourage every patriotic Indian looking to contribute to the defence of our motherland to read this book to draw their respective course of actions. – Anil Sharma, Producer-Director of Bollywood movie Gadar In the present global environment, to protect their freedom and territorial integrity, countries need armed forces. To complement such forces, reserves are required. This can be met by the creation of a body of part-time soldiers in the form of a territorial army with short-training spells on weekends and holidays. This body, which is fondly known as the citizens’ army across the world, can be formed out of all able-bodied men and women who are willing to defend their motherland; and in the normal course are engaged in their respective civilian occupations. The officers of this type of army, including those in high staff and leadership positions from the corporate world or otherwise, would principally be citizen-soldiers supported by a limited number of professional soldiers from the regular army. These regular soldiers would comprise the staff and command appointments which require continuity and full-time commitments; and who would also perform permanent technical, administrative and training assignments. Nations which adopt this kind of a military system assume a large and ready defence force of immediate combat value, at a cost to the exchequer, far below that of the more familiar nature of military systems.

Book Description
The Soviet Military Experience is the first general work to place the Soviet army into its true social, political and international contexts. It focuses on the Bolshevik Party's intention to create an army of a new type, whose aim was both to defend the people and propagate Marxist ideals to the rest of the world. It includes discussion of the: * origins of the Workers and Peasant's Red Army * effects of the Civil War * Bolshevik regime's use of the military as a school of socialism * effects of collectivization and rapid industrialisation of the 1920s and 1930s * Second World War and its profound repercussions * ethnic tensions within the army * effect of Gorbachev's policies of Glasnost and Perestroika

Book Description
For all too obvious reasons, war, empire, and military conflict have become extremely hot topics in the academy. Given the changing nature of war, one of the more promising areas of scholarly investigation has been the development of new theories of war and war’s impact on society. War, Citizenship, Territory features 19 chapters that look at the impact of war and militarism on citizenship, whether traditional territorially-bound national citizenship or "transnational" citizenship. The editors argue that while there has been an explosion of work on citizenship and territory, Western academia’s avoidance of the immediate effects of war (among other things) has led them to ignore war, which they contend is both pervasive and well nigh permanent. This volume sets forth a new, geopolitically based theory of war’s transformative role on contemporary forms of citizenship and territoriality, and includes empirical chapters that offer global coverage.

Book Description
This book, first published in 1985, is the first full-length study of the Soviet Armed Forces as a social institution. Using military manpower as a substantive focus, it identifies those characteristics that the Soviet military shared with counterparts in non-communist systems and those that were unique to the society and political culture in which it was embedded. The discussion encompasses defence policy-making as a whole and focuses on conscription policy, the characteristics of the professional military, the role of the political officer, the mechanics of political socialization within the Red Army, and the experience of ethnic minorities in the armed forces. This analysis provides a window through which we can observe the broader military system at work; how that system affects, and in turn is affected by, the economic, social and political life of the Soviet Union. It contributes to our understanding of civil-military relations in communist systems and to our knowledge of Soviet political and social trends.
