Book Description
This volume contains lectures presented by Hugh L. Montgomery at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference held at Kansas State University in May 1990. The book focuses on important topics in analytic number theory that involve ideas from harmonic analysis. One particularly valuable aspect of the book is that it collects material that was either unpublished or that had appeared only in the research literature. The book should be a useful resource for harmonic analysts interested in moving into research in analytic number theory. In addition, it is suitable as a textbook in an advanced graduate topics course in number theory.

Book Description
The theory of dual algebras has made tremendous progress since 1978, when Scott Brown originated some of the main ideas to solve the invariant subspace problem for subnormal operators. This book presents ideas concerning the solution of systems of simultaneous equations in the predual of a dual algebra, thereby developing a dilation theory.

Book Description
This book is based on a set of lectures presented by the author at the NSF-CBMS Regional Conference, Applications of Operator Algebras to Knot Theory and Mathematical Physics, held at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in June 1988. The audience consisted of low-dimensional topologists and operator algebraists, so the speaker attempted to make the material comprehensible to both groups. He provides an extensive introduction to the theory of von Neumann algebras and to knot theory and braid groups. The presentation follows the historical development of the theory of subfactors and the ensuing applications to knot theory, including full proofs of some of the major results. The author treats in detail the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials, introduces statistical mechanical methods on knot diagrams, and attempts an analogy with conformal field theory. Written by one of the foremost mathematicians of the day, this book will give readers an appreciation of the unexpected interconnections between different parts of mathematics and physics.

Book Description
Number Theory is more than a comprehensive treatment of the subject. It is an introduction to topics in higher level mathematics, and unique in its scope; topics from analysis, modern algebra, and discrete mathematics are all included. The book is divided into two parts. Part A covers key concepts of number theory and could serve as a first course on the subject. Part B delves into more advanced topics and an exploration of related mathematics. The prerequisites for this self-contained text are elements from linear algebra. Valuable references for the reader are collected at the end of each chapter. It is suitable as an introduction to higher level mathematics for undergraduates, or for self-study.

Book Description
Eduard Wirsing was an outstanding number theorist. In his research he made significant contributions to various subfields of number theory and also collaborated with other eminent scientists (e.g., with the Fields Medalist Alan Baker as well as Don Zagier). This commemorative volume includes numerous papers on current research in number theory by well-known experts, as well as some personal recollections by companions of Wirsing. The topics covered in this volume include arithmetical functions, continued fractions, elementary proofs of the prime number theorem, friable integers, the Goldbach problem, Dirichlet series, Euler products, and more. There is something for every interested reader.

Book Description
This volume has three chief objectives: 1) the determination of local Euler factors on classical groups in an explicit rational form; 2) Euler products and Eisenstein series on a unitary group of an arbitrary signature; and 3) a class number formula for a totally definite hermitian form. Though these are new results that have never before been published, Shimura starts with a quite general setting. He includes many topics of an expository nature so that the book can be viewed as an introduction to the theory of automorphic forms of several variables, Hecke theory in particular. Eventually, the exposition is specialized to unitary groups, but they are treated as a model case so that the reader can easily formulate the corresponding facts for other groups. There are various facts on algebraic groups and their localizations that are standard but were proved in some old papers or just called well-known. In this book, the reader will find the proofs of many of them, as well as systematic expositions of the topics. This is the first book in which the Hecke theory of a general (nonsplit) classical group is treated. The book is practically self-contained, except that familiarity with algebraic number theory is assumed.
