Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) are a now rare, glacial relict species occupying only a fraction of their historic range in Montana. The population in Upper Red Rock Lake is the only significant remaining native, adfluvial population and has undergone significant declines in abundance and distribution. Previous studies have documented instances of very low winter DO in the lake and low overwinter survival due to winter hypoxia has been hypothesized as a potential limiting factor for this population. We tested this hypothesis using a combined laboratory and telemetry study to document extent of hypoxia in Upper Red Rock Lake over two winters and assess the physiological tolerance, behavioral response and winter survival rate to hypoxia. In the laboratory study we observed a significant behavioral and physiological response to DO 4 mg/L and determined 24-hr LD 50 values of 0.75 mg/L for adults and 1.50 - 1.96 for juveniles at temperatures of 1 - 3°C. This report concerns part of a program to conserve & restore Arctic grayling stocks & habitat in the Williston watershed of British Columbia. It describes a study conducted to determine migratory patterns, overwinter distribution & habitat, and spawning areas & habitats of Arctic grayling in the Table & Anzac rivers, both tributaries of the Parsnip River. In the study, 55 grayling were captured, surgically implanted with radio transmitters, and released back into the Table & Anzac rivers. The fish were tracked by aerial radio telemetry on a monthly basis during the winter of 1996-97 to identify overwinter locations and on a biweekly basis in April once migrations had started. Tracking flight frequency was increased to weekly during the suspected spawning period (May & June) and then monthly until October. In addition, underwater surveys were conducted in September to verify conditions of tagged fish. Results are presented & discussed regarding survival rates; migrations to overwintering, spawning, & summer feeding areas; and spawning area characteristics. The final section discusses management implications based on the findings.

This study will describe the seasonal distribution of Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus captured in Hungry Hollow Creek of the Middle Fork Gulkana River during summer. Arctic grayling will be captured using hook-and-line gear in mid-July. One hundred adult Arctic grayling ≥320 mm FL will be surgically implanted with radio tags that will operate for ~17 months. Radiotagged Arctic grayling will be tracked throughout the year to determine overall distribution, including overwintering, spawning, and summering areas, as well as migration timing among these locations. The seasonal proportion of the tagged fish residing in Hungry Hollow Creak and the mainstem of the Gulkana River will also be estimated.
