New technologies generate positive externalities -- non-innovators can benefit through the adoption or imitation of the new technologies. International trade serves as a major channel for technology diffusion, allowing importing countries to acquire technical knowledge that they can potentially internalize. To empirically test the effects of trade on technology diffusion, the previous literature typically considers the effects of direct (bilateral) trade on indirect measures of technologies (e.g., TFP). We conjecture that the impact of trade on technology diffusion would be more accurately measured by taking into account both the direct and indirect network effects and by using direct measures of technologies (e.g., intensity levels). The international trade system can be considered as a weighted network. Technology may be diffused, not only bilaterally between countries, but also through the network effects, i.e., indirectly by trading with intermediate countries. We find that the network effects of trade play a significant role in technology diffusion. In most cases, countries better-connected on the trade network have higher technology intensities. Further support for the importance of trade is provided by our finding that for “outdated” technologies, better-connected countries have lower technology intensities.

This paper studies how information and communication technology (ICT) improvements affect trade along the value chain and international technology diffusion. We examine the impact of a revolutionary technology, the roll-out of the global telegraph network, on the 19th century cotton textile industry. First, we show that connection to the telegraph disproportionately increased trade in intermediate goods relative to final goods. We document that this was due to differences in codifiability; that is, the extent to which product specifications could be communicated at a distance using only words (and thus by sending telegrams) as opposed to inspecting a sample of the product. Second, adoption of the telegraph also facilitated international technology diffusion through the complementary mechanisms of importing machinery and acquiring knowledge of the production process and local demand through importing intermediates. These results shed light on how ICT facilitates the formation of global value chains and the diffusion of frontier technology.

Against a backdrop of economic uncertainty caused by a shift toward protectionism and the COVID-19 pandemic among other issues, this book suggests that international trade fairs (ITFs) represent a vital source of economic dynamism that can support national and regional economies by creating opportunities for firms to access new markets, network with key actors in their industry or value chain, and tap into valuable external knowledge flows regarding new technologies and innovations. Author Rachael Gibson argues that ITFs have become crucial nodes in the global political economy, driving global economic dynamics and mediating differences between capitalist economies regarding their technological and institutional practices and conditions. In this way, ITFs represent a decisive mechanism by which distinct national patterns of technological specialization may converge or diverge. Trade fairs represent important platforms for networking, interactive learning, and knowledge exchange because they foster intense interactions among actors despite spatial boundaries. ITFs also tend to be organized according to a specific technological or industry focus, which means that they can facilitate interactions between firms from different capitalist varieties. Through the diffusion of state-of-the-art knowledge, ITFs may, thus, serve as drivers of economic globalization, challenging the continuation of distinct capitalist varieties by enabling cross-system convergence regarding the technological specializations of firms. Yet, it is clear that countries have retained competitive advantages in specific industries and that full convergence has not taken place. This book explores this puzzle.
