Book Description
" What started as a slight speech problem, was quickly followed by some motoric difficulties and by the time Alexander was five years of age, it was obvious he had a learning difficulty. By the age of seven he was formally diagnosed as being deeply dyslexic and I was strongly advised to place Alexander in a boarding-school for Dyslexics. In true Celtic tradition I said "To hell with that!" It was then that I decided that this bright, sensitive little boy of mine was not going to be handicapped or disadvantaged by this dreadful condition called Dyslexia. I had yet to learn that the resources available to help parents help their dyslexic children are woefully inadequate in just about every society - despite the fact that dyslexia is a $15 billion a year research industry. I began to realize just how desperate and frustrated Augusto and Michaela Odone had become in their search, for what was to become known as Lorenzos Oil. The turning point was when I met Marianne a gifted special needs teacher. We pooled our experiences and research and set about designing a program that would cure Alexander. Without any official help, support, or interest - we succeeded. Despite what many experts say about dyslexia, for many dyslexics there is a cure and we proved it." Extract from an interview with John Evan-Jones in the Scandinavian media. "Dyslexia there is a cure" is a dynamic new book written by John and Marianne Evan-Jones which is designed to help parents teach their dyslexic child to read. It briefly describes the symptoms and struggle that they experienced with their son Alexander (both in the UK and Denmark) and in detail contains a unique and easy to use home-teaching program. Entitled the P.O.W.E.R program (Power Over Words Equals Results), it is a complete home-teaching program that any parent can understand and use with startling results. Combining traditional special-needs teaching approaches with the latest psychological methods, it is now possible for any child to begin to read after the first session of the POWER program. Within a very short time of commencing the program, virtually any child will show a remarkable improvement in their reading, writing and spelling abilities. Since its first publication in Scandinavia, thousands of parents from around the world have contacted John and Marianne Evan-Jones for help and advice, many of them buying the Danish version of the book and having it translated at their own cost. Because of this huge interest, John and Marianne Evan-Jones have now decided to release the book in English.

Book Description
Dyslexia is seen primarily as a limitation in the ability to deal with symbolic material. As far as the symbols of mathematics are concerned, therefore, special teaching techniques are needed, just as they are for the teaching of reading and spelling. The book contains a wealth of material on individual cases and on children of different ages. Two central themes are discussed: first, that dyslexics need to carry out the operations of adding, dividing, and so on, before being introduced to the symbolism; and second that, because of their difficulties with rote learning, they need to be shown the many regularities and patterns which can be found in the number system. All the contributors have had experience of teaching dyslexic children at various levels.
