Book Description
TPP for drugs to prevent pre-eclampsia Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia affect 4.6% and 1.4% of pregnant women, respectively. They account for the majority of maternal deaths and stillbirths due to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Pre-eclampsia can also negatively affect fetal growth, and increase the risk of preterm birth and fetal death. There is an urgent need to identify new agents to prevent pre-eclampsia. An initial target product profile (TPP) for drugs to prevent pre-eclampsia was developed and published by external parties. Following the identification of an unmet public health need, WHO has considered the already published TPP as the basis for developing a WHO TPP. This WHO TPP describes the key characteristics and desired attributes of preventive agents that should be administered to pregnant women identified as being at increased risk of developing pre-eclampsia, accompanied by monitoring for the development of pre-eclampsia. This TPP outlines minimal and preferred characteristics of a medicine that should: - prevent the development of pre- eclampsia; - have a good safety profile during pregnancy; - be commenced early in pregnancy (before 20 weeks’ gestation) and continued throughout pregnancy and postpartum as required; - be suitable for administration in any health care setting where pregnant women receive antenatal care, including in LMICs.

Book Description
Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy continues its tradition as one of the beacons to guide the field of preeclampsia research, recognized for its uniqueness and utility. Hypertensive disorders remain one the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and death. It is also a leading cause of preterm birth now known to be a risk factor in remote cardiovascular disease. Despite this the hypertensive disorders remain marginally studied and management is often controversial. The fourth edition of Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy focuses on prediction, prevention, and management for clinicians, and is an essential reference text for clinical and basic investigators alike. Differing from other texts devoted to preeclampsia, it covers the whole gamut of high blood pressure, and not just preeclampsia. - Features new chapters focusing on recent discoveries in areas such as fetal programming, genomics/proteomics, and angiogenesis - Includes extensive updates to chapters on epidemiology, etiological considerations, pathophysiology, prediction, prevention, and management - Discusses the emerging roles of metabolic syndrome and obesity and the increasing incidence of preeclampsia - Each section overseen by one of the editors; each chapter co-authored by one of the editors, ensuring coherence throughout book

Book Description
The endothelium enables communication between blood and tissues and is actively involved in cardiovascular homeostasis. Endothelial dysfunction has been recognized as an early step in the development of cardiovascular diseases: respectively, endothelium represents a potential therapeutic niche with multiple targets. The purpose of the book is to point out some recent findings of endothelial physiology and pathophysiology emphasizing various aspects of endothelial dysfunction connected to the body's internal and external environment. While basic features of the endothelium are presented in an introductory chapter, the authors of the following 17 chapters have provided extensive insight into some selected topics of endothelial (dys)function. The book would hopefully be useful for anyone interested in recapitulating endothelial (patho)physiology and expanding knowledge of molecular mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction, relevant also for further clinical investigations.

Book Description
Hypertensive disorders are among the most common medical complications of pregnancy, with an incidence of approximately 6-10%. This spectrum of conditions includes essential hypertension, pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. For patients with pre-existing hypertension, management ideally commences prior to conception, and continues through pregnancy to the postnatal period. This book provides information on the evidence-based management of women with hypertension throughout pregnancy, supported by important background information on the etiology, risk-factors and pathophysiology of these disorders. Illustrated with accompanying algorithms, tables and lists for quick reference on diagnostic criteria, drugs and side-effects, this book will help clinicians rapidly gain access to the information they need to care for these patients. This will to be of interest to all grades of obstetric trainees as well as specialists, obstetric anesthetists and anesthetic trainees, midwives and maternal-fetal physicians.

Book Description
Respiratory diseases affect a large proportion of the population and can cause complications when associated with pregnancy. Pregnancy induces profound anatomical and functional physiological changes in the mother, and subjects the mother to pregnancy-specific respiratory conditions. Reviewing respiratory conditions both specific and non-specific to pregnancy, the book also addresses related issues such as smoking and mechanical ventilation. Basic concepts for the obstetrician are covered, including patient history, physiology and initial examinations. Topics such as physiological changes during pregnancy and placental gas exchange are discussed for the non-obstetrician. Guidance is practical, covering antenatal and post-partum care, as well as management in the delivery suite. An essential guide to respiratory diseases in pregnancy, this book is indispensable to both obstetricians and non-obstetric physicians managing pregnant patients.

Book Description
In recent years our understanding of molecular mechanisms of drug action and interindividual variability in drug response has grown enormously. Meanwhile, the practice of anesthesiology has expanded to the preoperative environment and numerous locations outside the OR. Anesthetic Pharmacology: Basic Principles and Clinical Practice, 2nd edition, is an outstanding therapeutic resource in anesthesia and critical care: Section 1 introduces the principles of drug action, Section 2 presents the molecular, cellular and integrated physiology of the target organ/functional system and Section 3 reviews the pharmacology and toxicology of anesthetic drugs. The new Section 4, Therapeutics of Clinical Practice, provides integrated and comparative pharmacology and the practical application of drugs in daily clinical practice. Edited by three highly acclaimed academic anesthetic pharmacologists, with contributions from an international team of experts, and illustrated in full colour, this is a sophisticated, user-friendly resource for all practitioners providing care in the perioperative period.
