Book Description
"This volume was first delivered at a conference organised by the Association for Industrial Archaeology in Nottingham in June 2004, and formerly constituted a special issue of Industrial Archaeology Review. The papers have the explicit intention of formulating a research framework for industrial archaeology in the 21st century and demonstrating how far industrial archaeology is now a fully recognised element of mainstream archaeology."

Book Description
Wet, wooded and largely unattractive is how some have characterised the northern Midlands in the Bronze Age. In this thesis, David Mullin undertakes an archaeological investigation of the ill-studied regions of Cheshire, northern Shropshire and northern Staffordshire. Despite the paucity of work carried out to investigate the prehistory of the area, Mullin pieces together evidence for Bronze Age burials, lithics, settlements, the exploitation of the landscape, metalwork and metal production. He argues for the importance of social networks, memory and attachments to the landscape in the Bronze Age and highlights the potential of the area for more thorough archaeological research.

Book Description
An enlightening journey into the languages, meanings, and history behind the names on England’s map. The origins of the names of many English towns, hamlets, and villages date as far back as Saxon times, when kings like Alfred the Great established fortified borough towns to defend against the Danes. A number of settlements were established and named by French Normans following the Conquest. Many are even older and are derived from Roman place names. Some hark back to the Vikings who invaded and established settlements in the eighth and ninth centuries. Most began as simple descriptions of the location; some identified its founder, marked territorial limits, or gave tribal people a sense of their place in the grand scheme of things. Whatever their derivation, place names are inextricably bound up in history—and these are the stories behind them.
