Book Description
This document reports on the Department of National Defence (DND) Tactical Aviation Mission System Simulation (TAMSS) Situation Awareness (SA) project. The TAMSS SA project was conducted at the Centre for Applied Cognitive Research (CACR) at the Carleton University. In accord with the original goals of this project, the deliverables included the development of a CH146 Griffon simulation capability at the CACR, the development of a theoretical framework to guide the evaluation process, three experiments that both assessed an engineering system and a theoretical framework, and this document, which summarizes the TAMSS SA project and provides a link to acquisition programs and to potential simulation based training applications.

Book Description
Aviators rely heavily on Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) imagery. Weather impacted terrain and targets significantly impedes an aircrew's ability to navigate and to rapidly and accurately detect and identify targets. Weather degradation increases target acquisition and identification times, subjecting the aircraft and crew to increased exposure to enemy threats and counterattacks, ultimately decreasing system lethality and survivability. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the Air Force Research Agency (AFRA) and the U.S. Army Aviation Test Directorate, Operational Test Command tested the utility of the Infrared Target-scene Simulation Software (IRTSS) System as a mission planning and rehearsal tool for AH-64 Apache attack aviation. IRTSS translates information dominance into readily assimilated situational awareness by fusing tactical intelligence with weather intelligence. Increased situational awareness mitigates risk. and improves aircrew/aircraft lethality and survivability. The IRTSS software running in a commercial web browser generated FLIR scenes for the AH- 64 Target Acquisition Detection Site (TAD S) providing a mechanism for systematically accounting for weather and weather-related effects on the terrain. This technology optimizes for both the anticipated tactical situation and environmental conditions. Using control and test groups of Army aviators, we tested the improvements IRTSS brings to ranking Battle Position (BP) in comparison to using hard copy maps and the Aviation Mission Planning System (AMPS). The tests also measured the change in target detection times using live TADS video following previews of IRTSS scenes.

Book Description
The concept of using simulation for training is not new in the aviation experience. Flight simulators have been in existence since the early 1920s and have evolved from non-mechanical, tethered aircraft to high fidelity, multi-million dollar motion platforms. In the demanding and dynamic environment of aviation, errors can be catastrophic. It is not surprising that both the civilian and military communities have made simulation training a critical component of their aviation training programs. Despite the wide variety of simulation training efforts being pursued by military and civilian aviation alike, there is limited research on the subject of low-cost team training, particularly in the area of situation awareness. Most research has been directed toward individual task performance. Only in recent years has additional emphasis been placed on crew resource management (CRM). Even less literature exists on the concept of aircraft to aircraft team training an intercockpit training model as opposed to an infracockpit training model. Simulation being used by the U.S. Army that is team based focuses mostly on commander and battle staff training. There is a clear lack of research concerning the suitability of using low-cost simulation for training U.S. Army aviators in team collective tasks and situational awareness (SA). The purpose of this research is to develop an assessment tool and conceptual model, tailored to emulate Army aviation platforms, that can be used in an situational awareness training goals. Lessons learned and areas for future research are also discussed.

Book Description
A technology has been developed for incorporating situation awareness (SA) measures into an inexpensive flight simulator. In this Phase 2 report, the final configuration of the simulator is described in detail, the first demonstration project to determine its training and psychometric characteristics is documented, and extensive hardware/software descriptions are provided. This Situation Awareness Flight Trainer Evaluator (SAFTE) system permits an experimenter to present operationally relevant portions of aircraft missions in a laboratory desktop environment, while obtaining measures of the operator's SA embedded within the simulation. Measures of SA include spatial disorientation, awareness of aircraft present and predicted position, and several experimental metrics. In addition to the initial development, a modified SAFTE system was implemented into a human centrifuge at Brooks AFB to assess the impact of acceleration forces on pilot performance, and this development is described. Conclusions and recommendations concerning the further evolution of the SAFTE system include an assessment of the experimental SA metrics, addition of skill measures other than SA, and an evaluation of the value of this type of training for novice pilots.

Book Description
Simulations are widely used in the military for training personnel, analyzing proposed equipment, and rehearsing missions, and these simulations need realistic models of human behavior. This book draws together a wide variety of theoretical and applied research in human behavior modeling that can be considered for use in those simulations. It covers behavior at the individual, unit, and command level. At the individual soldier level, the topics covered include attention, learning, memory, decisionmaking, perception, situation awareness, and planning. At the unit level, the focus is on command and control. The book provides short-, medium-, and long-term goals for research and development of more realistic models of human behavior.

Book Description
A simulation study of the usefullness of the Joint Tactical Information Distribution System in a tactical situation was conducted using the A-10 flight simulator. Thirteen currently operational pilots from TAC and USMC units each flew eight missions. The missions included both close air support and interdiction scenarios in a tactical environment, and the pilots were assigned to those conditions using an ABBA experimental design. Subjective data provided by the pilots showed a definite preference for the JTIDS system. Experimental results indicated that JTIDS offers the capability for low task lead navigation, better communications, and improved situation awareness. The potential benefits of the system include an increased probability of mission success and improved survivability.
