Cette place naturelle du dessin dans son ouvre se traduit par plus de 7 000 dessins répertoriés et conservés au musée Rodin et dans d'autres collections, qui forment comme le récit de la quête passionnée d'une forme juste, exacte, vibrante. Des dessins « noirs » contemporains de La Porte de l'Enfer aux grands nus aquarellés, cet ouvrage offre un large panorama de son travail.
