Book Description
Excerpt from Textbook of Botany for Colleges and Universities, Vol. 1: Part II, Physiology We recognize that the presentation of the three great subjects here included is very compact, but the book is not intended for reading and recitation. The teacher is expected to use it for suggestive material and for its organization; the student is expected to use it in relating his observations to one another and to the general points of view that the book seeks to develop. There is a continuity of presentation in each part, so that random selection may miss the largest meaning. For example, in the part on morphology, the thread upon which the facts are strung is the evolution of the plant kingdom, and each plant introduced has its peculiar application in illustrating some phase of this evolution. When certain groups are selected for laboratory study, therefore, the intervening text should be read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Text-Book of Botany, Morphological and Physiological In the notes the citations of authorities have been somewhat increased. It has also seemed desirable sometimesto depart from the author's rule ot'passing over authorities whose interest is now chiefly historical. References have been given to English and French translations of many of the papers and memoirs quoted, as these are at any rate often more accessible in this country than the originals. Book Description
Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 1 of 2 Although a short time only has elapsed since -the publication of the fourth edition of this work, the labours of physiologists have been so nume rous, diversified, and important, as to demand material modifications and additions in the present edition. No little time and industry have been bestowed by the author to introduce these, and to digest the various mate rials contained in the ex professo treatises, as well as in the different periodi cals of this country and of Europe. Histology' and histogeny properly, perhaps, belong to works on anatomy; but these have been so much culti yated by recent physiologists, so extensively introduced' into physiological works, and have such an important bearing on the doctrine of the functions, that, although the author has not treated of them in extenso, he has endea voured to bestow upon them due attention. Book Description
Excerpt from An Elementary System of Physiology, Vol. 2 The reception, which the first volume of this trea tise experienced, could leave no doubt in my mind as to the necessity of completing the work; and I lament that certain circumstances, which were unavoidable, have delayed for so long a period the publication of the second part. As, however, the circumstances to Which I allude no longer exist, I may indulge a hope that the third volume will succeed the present at a considerably shorter interval. 1 have, as nearly as pos sible, pursued the same method of giving an account of the best established facts, and the most approved by potheses; freely offering my remarks upon them, and pointing out any part which appeared to be objection able. I have, however, found it a very difficult task to arrive at any satisfactory conclusion, with respect to many of the topics that are discussed in this volume. For, singular as it may appear, although most of them profess to be established on the basis of direct experi ments, and such as would appear not to be of very dif ficult execution, yet we shall find that every step of the track through which I have had to pass, is on debate able ground. On this account, I have frequently felt it necessary to dissent from the Opinions of the most eminent physiologists of the age but when I have done this, i have given my reason for the dissent; and.
