Employing a hybrid theoretical framework of Role and Reference Grammar and Construction Grammar, this volume investigates the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of the diverse families of Japanese constructions in which the verbal suffix TE (approximately the English 'and') is a linking device. The TE suffix is the most frequent and versatile connective in Japanese, able to link all three types of verbal constituents. Because the semantic relations obtainable between the conjuncts are heterogeneous, the prevailing view is that TE-linkage is a mere syntactic device with no semantic content; and the interpreter must infer intended semantic relations based on extra linguistic knowledge. However, closer examination reveals clear correlations between its syntax and semantics that have been obscured in previous studies which did not investigate TE-constructions as pairings of form and meaning. Detailed analysis of TE-linkage is of special significance to linguistic theory because it inevitably involves the search for an adequate descriptive framework for representing connectives.

This volume brings together recent scholarship addressing a number of significant issues in linguistic theory and description, including verb classification, case marking, comparative constructions, noun phrase structure, clause linkage and reference-tracking in discourse. The theoretical perspective employed in these analyses is that of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), a theory which strives to describe language structure and grammatical phenomena in terms of the interaction of syntax, semantics and discourse-pragmatics. The volume on Semantics and Pragmatics presents a collection of studies on linguistic meaning in Japanese, either as conventionally encoded in linguistic form (the field of semantics) or as generated by the interaction of form with context (the field of pragmatics), representing a range of ideas and approaches that are currently most influentialin these fields. The studies are organized around a model that has long currency in traditional Japanese grammar, whereby the linguistic clause consists of a multiply nested structure centered in a propositional core of objective meaning around which forms are deployed that express progressively more subjective meaning as one moves away from the core toward the periphery of the clause. The volume seeks to achieve a balance in highlighting both insights that semantic and pragmatic theory has to offer to the study of Japanese as a particular language and, conversely, contributions that Japanese has to make to semantic and pragmatic theory in areas of meaning that are either uniquely encoded, or encoded to a higher degree of specificity, in Japanese by comparison to other languages, such as conditional forms, forms expressing varying types of speaker modality, and social deixis.

In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in grammatical constructionsunits of grammar representing formmeaning correspondences. The movement in which Construction Grammar, as developed by Charles Fillmore and Paul Kay, has played a significant role, has arisen in part as aresponse to the Chomskyan modular approach, which treats grammatical constructions as epiphenomenal, dismantling their component features and attributing these to general principles of grammar. This volume is the first collection to focus on grammatical constructions per se, and is dedicated to Charles Fillmore in recognition of his leadership in the field.
