Book Description
In the late 19th century, Lowell, Massachusetts was one of the most popular American cities for Swedish immigrants hoping to start a new life. "Swedes in Lowell" is the modern translation of Olof Berntson's 1917 book, "Svenskarne i Lowell, Mass.", which documents the humble beginnings and robust growth of Lowell's Swedish population from 1857 to 1917. Berntson lists the minutia of arrivals, marriages, births, and deaths, but also outlines the formation of Swedish religious congregations and community organizations in the city. "Swedes in Lowell" tells the story of this close-knit immigrant community using the broad strokes of historical perspective and the fine detailing of day-to-day living.

Scandinavian Exodus
Author: Briant Lindsay Lowell
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000238849
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 287
Book Description
First published in 1987. During the last half of the nineteenth century, nearly two million Norwegians and Swedes migrated to the United States. Declining rates of emigration are moderately associated with the development of urban-industrialization in Scandinavia toward the end of the 19th century. Still, the major explanation of the decline of emigration is argued to be less a response to new urban opportunities than the end result of the transformation of rural, peasant classes and the decay of the diffusion process. In this volume economic change, agricultural development, and the course of the demographic transition are separately considered to isolate the causes underlying the emigration. The social historical context is examined with an eye toward casting the results of this study in a broader light. Those lessons learned in the study of Scandinavian experience are applicable to similar processes currently unfolding in contemporary developing countries.

Written in the Snows
Author: Lowell Skoog
Publisher: Mountaineers Books
ISBN: 1680512919
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 455
Book Description
Century of Northwest wilderness skiing stories by noted expert 150 black-and-white and color photographs Celebrates the friluftsliv, or open-air living spirit, of backcountry skiing In Written in the Snows, renowned local skiing historian Lowell Skoog presents a definitive and visually rich history of the past century of Northwest ski culture, from stirring and colorful stories of wilderness exploration to the evolution of gear and technique. He traces the development of skiing in Washington from the late 1800s to the present, covering the beginnings of ski resorts and competitions, the importance of wild places in the Olympic and Cascade mountains (including Oregon's Mount Hood), and the friluftsliv, or open-air living spirit, of backcountry skiing. Skoog addresses how skiing has been shaped by larger social trends, including immigration, the Great Depression, war, economic growth, conservation, and the media. In turn, Northwest skiers have affected their region in ways that transcend the sport, producing local legends like Milnor Roberts, Olga Bolstad, Hans Otto Giese, Bill Maxwell, and more. While weaving his own impressions and experiences into the larger history, Skoog shows that skiing is far more than mere sport or recreation.
