Book Description
The Latin American and Caribbean Regional Plan of Action on Human Settlements was agreed at the Latin American and Caribbean Regional Preparatory Meeting to the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in 1995. It was considered that the Plan seems to remain fully valid in its aim of achieving sustainable progress in human settlements by integrating a variety of development dimensions. It was, though, felt that the plans effectiveness was limited due to inherent vagueness. The current text elaborates and attempts to clarify the 5 main thematic areas that the Regional Plan of Action identified. Those 5 areas can be summarised as follows: obstacles posed by poverty; the necessity for human settlements to become more productive; concern for the urban environment and vulnerability; the need to consolidate governance; and the need to enhance the efficiency of housing sector policies

Book Description
'The world has entered the urban millennium. Nearly half the world's people are now city dwellers, and the rapid increase in urban population is expected to continue, mainly in developing countries. This historic transition is being further propelled by the powerful forces of globalization. The central challenge for the international community is clear: to make both urbanization and globalization work for all people, instead of leaving billions behind or on the margins. Cities in a Globalizing World: Global Report on Human Settlements is a comprehensive review of conditions in the world's cities and the prospects for making them better, safer places to live in an age of globalization. I hope that it will provide all stakeholders - foremost among them the urban poor themselves - with reliable and timely information with which to set our policies right and get the machinery of urban life moving in a constructive direction.' From the Foreword by Kofi Annan, Secretary-General, United Nations. Cities in a Globalizing World presents a comprehensive review of the world's cities and analyses the positive and negative impacts on human settlements of the global trends towards social and economic integration and the rapid changes in information and communication technologies. In this Global Report, the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) draws on specially commissioned and contributed background papers from more than 80 leading international specialists. The report focuses on recent trends in human settlements and their implications for poverty, inequity and social polarization. It develops advance knowledge for urban planning and management policies in support and promotion of inclusive cities and good urban governance. This major and influential report is the most authoritative and up-to-date assessment of human settlements conditions and trends. Written in clear, non-technical language and supported by informative graphics, case studies and extensive statistical data, it should be an essential tool and reference for academics, researchers, planners, public authorities and civil society organizations around the world.

Book Description
For the first time in human history, the majority of the world's population lives in cities rather than rural areas. Whereas in industrialized countries urban and transport development has now reached a certain degree of saturation, it is proceeding in other regions of the world with an enormous dynamism. This book presents for the first time a survey of global urban and transport development in order to gain an overview of the magnitude of the global challenges. Against this background, the study proposes a direction for future deliberations that will provide an adequate response to the looming urban mobility problems. Book Description
This book evaluates the impact of 20 years of urban policies in six Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico. It argues that evaluating the fulfillment of past commitments is essential for framing and meeting the new commitments that were taken in Habitat III over the next 20 years. Taken as a whole, the book provides a critical assessment of the economic, social and environmental consequences of urban interventions during Habitat II. The country-level chapters have been written by recognized experts in urban issues, with first-hand knowledge of the Habitat process, and deep familiarity with the problems, statistics, actors and political contexts of their nations. The latter part of the volume considers wider topics such as the Habitat Commitment Index, the New Urban Agenda and the regional and global-scale lessons that can be extracted from this group of countries. Urban Policy in Latin America will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and policymakers across development economics, urban studies and Latin American studies.

Book Description
First published in 1987, Shelter, Settlement & Development presents a comprehensive and authoritative reappraisal of shelter, settlement and development policies and programs in third world countries. Drawing on the considerable research and advisory experience of an internationally distinguished group of contributors, it introduces new ideas on many themes such as spatial strategies, land policy, shanty town settlements, infrastructure standards and construction obstacles, intricacies of housing finance and household behaviour and preferences. Each facet of the study sums up what can be inferred from past experience: what worked and what did not, and why; what ideas are in currency; what policy choices lie ahead; and most important of all, what further changes are needed to achieve feasible and effective solutions, not quick fixes, or one-shot remedies. There is a special focus on the necessary learning processes so that whatever action is taken is likely to be self-correcting in the light of subsequent experience, reflection and changing circumstances. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of development studies, urban studies and planning, and public policy.
