"Breast cancer affects thousands of women annually and the number of breast cancer survivors continues to rise. Most treatments for breast cancer are necessary to reach a cure but may be associated with adverse late and long-term effects that may impact a survivor's quality of life. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between the types of breast cancer treatments received and a survivor's reported quality of life. The study population included 55 women ages 18 years and above diagnosed with early-stage, curable breast cancer that completed at least treatment for their cancer. Afaf Meileis' middle-range Transition Theory was the nursing theoretical framework for this study. The research design was non-experimental, quantitative, and retrospective. A descriptive correlational design was used to describe relationships among variables. The Quality of Life in Adult Cancer Survivors (QLACS) survey with demographic and treatment questions was mailed to eligible participants. Likert-scale responses and study variables were recorded and analyzed. Participants had the worst quality of life scores in the areas of dealing with stress, fear of recurrence, fatigue, and aches and pains. Differences in quality of life scores were noted between patients who received and those how had not received the most common breast cancer treatment options. Statistically significant relationships were noted between the study variables and quality of life scores. These research results provide a practitioner educating a newly diagnosed breast cancer patient new knowledge about the differences in quality of life by receiving or not receiving common breast cancer treatments." -- From page v.

The economic burden of breast cancer for women under 50 in the United States remains largely unexplored, in part because young women make up a small proportion of breast cancer cases overall. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a web-based survey to compare data from breast cancer survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis and 40–49 years of age at first diagnosis.We administered a survey to a national convenience sample of 416 women who were 18–49 years of age at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis. We analyzed factors associated with financial decline using multivariate regression.Survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis were more likely to report Stage II–IV breast cancer (P < 0.01). They also quit their jobs more often (14.6%) than older survivors (4.4%; P < 0.01) and faced more job performance issues (55.7% and 42.8%, respectively; P = 0.02). For respondents in both groups, financial decline was more likely if the survivor had at least one comorbid condition (odds ratios: 2.36–3.21) or was diagnosed at Stage II–IV breast cancer (odds ratios: 2.04–3.51).

Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Quality of life is a common concept in the health status and health promotion literature. Improving quality of life is the most important outcome of health services. Hence, the World Health Organization raised the notion: "Adding years to life" is an empty victory without "adding life to years." No previous texts were published to ameliorate the quality of life for breast cancer survivors in Palestine. Therefore, this book comes to fill the gap in literature about the burden of breast cancer and its effect on quality of life of breast cancer survivors in Palestine. This book is divided into six chapters. Chapter one presented previous studies and reports about the global, regional and national burden of breast cancer. Chapter two analyzed the concepts and the themes of quality of life in general. Chapter three presented an extensive literature review of breast cancer and quality of life. Chapter four presented the empirical study conducted in Gaza strip to evaluate the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. Chapter five presented the results and discussion of the findings. Finally, chapter six showed the conclusion and the recommendations.
