Mabel ran away from the plantation when Cora was ten, leaving the girl to fend for herself. Cora hated Mabel for leaving her. She never found out that Mabel had in fact only gotten a few miles from the plantation, and then decided to turn back because she couldn't bear abandoning her child. However, before she could return, a poisonous snake bit her and she died in the swamp. The slave catcher who was hired to bring her back, named Ridgeway, never found her. His failure nagged at him.
