Stump sprouting often accounts for a great part of the reproduction in many hardwood stands and is an important factor in forest management. For certain species, reproduction from stumps is simple, rapid, & inexpensive and provides supplemental stocking to the reproduction from seedlings. This report concerns the treatment of stump sprouts to produce high quality timber through judicious thinning, which requires understanding the factors influencing sprout development and the application of specific silvicultural measures to sustain the optimal growth of sprouts. These aspects are discussed in sections covering the forms of stump sprouts, the factors influencing sprout development (species, age, parent stump diameter, location of sprouts on stump), the theory & methods of thinning clumps of sprouts, and ways to encourage sprouting & to thin clumps.
