Book Description
Excerpt from Study of the Sects This manual has been prepared at the request of the Unitarian Sunday-School Society for the use of the older classes in the schools to which that valuable body ministers. It may also be found useful to adult readers. Its aim is to present on the one hand a just and sympathetic account of the history and beliefs of the various bodies considered, and on the other hand to show plainly wherein Unitarians differ from them; to counteract the bigotry and conceit from which Unitarians have by no means freed themselves, and at the same time to show how weak and inconsistent is the position of those Unitarians who are anxious to have it understood that there is not, after all, much difference between them and their Evangelical brethren. The fundamental idea of this book is that the difference between the. two parties is as great as that between the Evangelicals and the Catholics, or would be if our Orthodox friends would stand still long enough to be photographed distinctly. The study of this subject and the consultations I have had with various representative men have surprised me by revealing the state of confusion and change in which all beliefs except those of the Roman Catholics now exist. Book Description
Excerpt from Sect, Creed and Custom in Judaism: A Study in Jewish Nomology The study of Minhagim, or Jewish Nomology, offers a quite satisfactory solution. It shows that the teachers of Judaism have never sacrificed unity for the sake of uniformity; that to maintain the whole firm and unshaken, the people were allowed to have their usages and customs altered. Abridged, enlarged, amended or otherwise dis posed of, to suit their condition or convenience. Like the ancient god to those who came to his tripod, Judaism taught that every one should com ply with the practices in use in the place he chanced to be. This found expression and was translated into a general tolerance which resulted in unity. And the proverbial stubborness of the Jews, their persistent refusal to yield implicit obedience to any one, their determination to decide for them selves what to select and what to reject, also acted as a check upon the presumption of those who, by reason of their power or position, would impose upon their people usages prompted by their piety or invented for their interest. Book Description
Excerpt from English Sects: An Historical Handbook Orthodox standard of belief to the stand point of anti-christian or frankly pagan teaching. Clearly, there is no common measure of all these various creeds and principles, but there is in the case of those sects which, whether they possess a for mulated creed or not, do in fact accept, if not the wording, at least the contents of the Nicene symbol. The subject of our diverse beliefs is usually treated in bulky and learned books which only the special student will consult. It is hoped that the small and handy size of this volume will bring to the notice of the general reader the leading facts which illustrate the unhappily divided state of English Christianity. Still more is it hoped that the reading of its pages will kindle a desire to help in removing the barriers which, for whatever cause, have been erected between sect and sect, be tween the sects and the Church. Book Description
Excerpt from The Psychology of Religious Sects: A Comparison of Types This little volume is an outgrowth of two very different kinds of experience, - a number of years in church work and a number of years in a psychological laboratory. The church work covered very dissimilar fields: slums on the east side of New York, a fashionable church on the west side, home-mission churches, churches north, south and west. In this religious work practical success depended upon the ability to interpret human nature. A working basis for classifying different religious types grew up unconsciously. Some people must be reached in one way, some in another. A successful worker bases his efforts upon a successful classification of religious types. A few years in the psychological laboratory brought out a supplementary truth. No two persons are exactly alike in their intellectual and emotional natures. The laboratory has many ways of measuring individual differences. One of the most fruitful branches of Psychology to-day is the study of Individual Differences. These are found in Attention, Association, Memory, Imagination, and, indeed, in every factor entering into human nature. The grouping of these differences into types has not yet been accomplished but promises to be one of the achievements of the future. Book Description
Excerpt from Christian Union: Or, an Argument for the Abolition of Sects; To Which Is Prefixed, a Sketch of the Life of the Author The main subject discussed in the following pages was some years ago pressed, by a particular providence, upon the attention of the author, and has continued to occupy more or less of his thoughts ever since that time. He has endeavoured to discover the truth by a direct ap plication and study of the Holy Scriptures; and the te sult has been a strong and settled conviction of the cor rectness of the principles advocated in this work. He believes that the church was originally constituted by its Founder one and indivisible - that the divisions which have broken it in pieces are in direct violation of this constitution, and have brought a flood of evils upon the church, which have hitherto kept her from rising to the glory to which she is destined.
