Global Livestock Production Systems
Author: Timothy P. Robinson
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO)
ISBN: 9789251070338
Category : Animal Production
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Informed livestock sector policy development and priority setting is heavily dependent on a good understanding of livestock production systems. In a collaborative effort between the Food and Agriculture Organization and the International Livestock Research Institute, stock has been taken of where we have come from in agricultural systems classification and mapping; the current state of the art; and the directions in which research and data collection efforts need to take in the future. The book also addresses issues relating to the intensity and scale of production, moving from what is done to how it is done. The intensification of production is an area of particular importance, for it is in the intensive systems that changes are occurring most rapidly and where most information is needed on the implications that intensification of production may have for livelihoods, poverty alleviation, animal diseases, public health and environmental outcomes. A series of case studies is provided, linking livestock production systems to rural livelihoods and poverty and examples of the application of livestock production system maps are drawn from livestock production, now and in the future; livestock's impact on the global environment; animal and public health; and livestock and livelihoods. This book provides a formal reference to Version 5 of the global livestock production systems map, and to revised estimates of the numbers of rural poor livestock keepers, by country and livestock production system.

Book Description
Morocco, reputedly the third oldest nation in Africa, is a country with a distinctive history, incredible scenery and remarkable people. Traditionally the colourful and varied nature of the country proved an irresistible attraction, first to travellers, and later to anthropologists. Occupying a strategic position at the western edge of the Arab world and at the gateway to Europe, Morocco faces important choices on whether to look north or east.

Book Description
The World Association for Animal Production produces this book that is a reference tool for the animal scientific community and for policy makers worldwide. Sixty authors from the six continents contributed with thirty outstanding manuscripts. This volume is the first of a series that will be produced every year. The objective of this project is to establish a reference volume for livestock system and research development, for the use of international organizations, research institutes, policy makers and animal industries, worldwide. This book is particularly interesting for those wanting to get a deeper knowledge on the ""state of the art"" of livestock systems in the six continents. This aspect is illustrated in the first section of the volume, while the second section describes the development of research activities in nineteen specific fields of animal science. Furthermore, the readers will certainly be interested by reading the ""contemporary issues"" manuscripts belonging to the third section. The articles of this section were selected to accomplish the most ""urgent"" topics in animal industry. The volume is also completed with relevant statistics, furnishing information and data in a homogenous and easy to read structure. The changes that have happened in animal industries in the last decades are clearly illustrated in tables and graphics. These data, together with the interpretation of the articles of the previous sections, will render easier the prediction of future scenarios. The World Association for Animal Production produces this book that is a reference tool for the animal scientific community and for policy makers worldwide.
