The present study has been undertaken to estimate volatile falty acids (VFA) production rates on one hand and bacterial production rates on the other in the rumen of buffalo calves given different levels of energy and protein to facilitate maximum fermentative rates and protein synthesis. The results indicated that there was no beneficial effect on bacterial protein synthesis by administerring extra protein in the diet than that recommended by NRC (1971). The bacterial protein synthesis was lowered when 40% of the DCP requirements by the animals was replaced with urea and high energy ration containign oil. At the same time maximum bacterial protein synthesis was observed when the animals were offered a ration of 100% DCP and 120% TDN. It was also observed that when 40% of the DCP requirement of the animals was met by feeding urea the effeciency of N-conversion into microbial protein was considerably reduced. It was found attributed to oil which was used as a source of energy which cannot contribute much towards the acceleration of microbial protein synthesis. It was pertinent to note that oil was not a suitable source for increasing the energy density of the diet as it primarily and adversely affects the consumption of various nutrients and digestibility of crude fibre which was an important source of energy at the cellular level and there by exerts a sparing action on the VFA'S produced in the rumen which influence the microbial protein synthesis favourably though to a limited extent.

The present investigations were undertaken to study the effect of pelletting and urea lpus agroindustrial byproducts based ration on-cellulose digestibility rate of release of ammonia and microbial protein synthesis in in vitro system in vivo rumen fermentation and digestability of nutrients in male buffalo calves and nutrient utilization and nitrogen metabolism in buffalo heifers. Pelletting of urea supplemented agroindustrial byproducts based ration decreased the cellulose digestability and rate of release of ammonia however microbial protein synthesis and 35 S in carporation in it was higher than non pelleted ration. Pelleting of concentrate pattern significantly. The rate of release of ammonia was decreased due to pellting the VFA production significantly but molar percentage of propionic acid was higher and acetic acid was lower in pelleted ration than non-pelleted ration. The ratio of acetic. Propionic acid was narrower in pellet fed animals as compared to the animals of other groups.

An investigation pertaining to levels of raighage: Concentration ratio in ruminal pH & VFA production in buffalo rumen was taken up. The treatments offered were roughage to concentration ratio i, e. A 100:0, B 80:20, C 60:40 and 40:60. The VFA concentration was more when the animals were fed rations on treatment B. The pH was high where the animals were rept on treatments A & B as compased to C & D. An inverse pHtotal VFA (volahie fatty acids relationship was observed in all the treatments In vivo the dry matter digestability. (IVDMD) as slightly higher on the increase of concentrate level in the substrate. In vivo cellulose disappearence increased significantly as the proportion of concentration increased in diet. In vitro DMD was more where the substrate of treatment B was incubated. In vitro maximum total VFA production was noted where the substrate of treatment of B was incubated and subsequent decline observed with higher levels of concentrate in substrate.
