The study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters of some of economic traits and construct pedigree and selection indices for buffaloes to construct sire indices for buffalo bulls based on milk yield and age at first calving to predict genetic gain in milk production per year from pedigree individual sib-testing and progeny testing selection and to estimate the economic returns and cost of selection and to compare the efficiencies of the different crieteria of selection in thre population sizes small medium and large. None of the genetic and phenotypic correlation between birth weight and other traits was significant. Age at first claving (AFC) had phenotypic correlation with WFC and FLMY and non significant correlation with FLL, FCI and BE. weight at first calving had positive phenotypic and genetic correlations of with FLMY. The correlation between individuals performance and its dams and sires indices were 0.23 and 0.993 respectively which indicated that selection of individual based on its dams yield was comparitively unreliable than that based on sires index. The expected breeding values indicated that the ranking of sires can be done either by taking FLMY alone or by considering AFC along with FLMY. The total genetic responses from progeny testing showed that as the population size increased the genetic response through all the given paths of genetic transmission as well as the total response increased. In case of half sib testing both BB(sire-bull) and BC (sire-cow) had the same genetic response. The total genetic response showed that at all levels of population. The responses obtained from progeny testing were the highest fallowed by that from half sibtesting. Gross returns per generation was highest in half sib testing fallowed by progeny testing. The in both small and medium populations the individual selection showed more monetary returns cost on semen was minimum in pedigree selection as compared to progeny and half sib testing. Genetic gain from the small sized population was quite low as compared to medium population and as the size of population genetic response increased half sib testing was most efficient in small population while progeny testing proved to be most efficient in medium and large populations.

Investigations were carried out to study the relationship of profit function, life production and herd life with reproductive variables and to study the relationship between first lactation and lifetime performance and to estimate the economic returns on the basis of first lactation performance. The least square analysis showed that the differences between the two genetic groups (higher and lower crosses) were significant for all the production and profit traits. Similarly the genetic group did not show significant differences in reproductive raits viz., number of inseminations per conception (1.69 and 1.74), firsst calving interval (423 and 426 days), days open percent (36.66 and 37.13) and weight at first calving (306 and 384 kg). Based on profit per day of lif an open period of 135 days in higher crosses and 134 days in lower crosses were found to be satisfactory. The days dry were optimised at 34.22 percent 26.98 percent, 20.22 percent, 24.84 percent and 24.11 percent, for hrd life, lifetime milk yield, milk yield per day of herd life, lifetime profit and profit per day of herd life in higher crosse, respectively. It was also observed that, one standard deviation decrease in mean days dry percent could maximise all the lifetime production traits in lower crosses. Long herd life was found to be necessary for maximum profit and profit per day of herd life. The age at first calving accounted for little in all the lifetime traits in both higher and lower crosses (3.11 to 5.54 percent and 0.07 to 2.11 percent). Similar observations were made with the weight at first calving. Herd life increased gradually upto first lactation (2500 kg) in lower crosses and 3000 kg in higher crosses. Increase in first lactation increased the lifetime traits. The genetic correlations between first lactation traits and lifetime traits were higher in higher crosses. Th phenotypic corrlations among lifetime traits were positive and significant except the correlations of days dry percent with other lifetime traits.
