Book Description
This report consists of three separate papers concerned with the climatology of jet streams and clear-air turbulence. The first paper is entitled 'Jet-Stream Structure over the Central United States Determined from Aircraft Observations.' In this study, empirical models of jet streams are found to agree well with previous models based on data from other regions of the mid-latitudes. Also, we found that variations in the speed field with season and with position in the upper flow pattern were rather small, so that a single model describes the jet stream adequately. The second paper is entitled 'Empirical Relationships Between Gust Intensity in Clear-Air Turbulence and Certain Meteorological Quantities.' This paper provides data of a type that has not been available previously, having applications to aircraft and missile design, and to the determination of world-wide turbulence statistics. The third paper is entitled 'Some Autocorrelations and Spectra of Wind and Temperature in Jet Streams.' Correlations were computed for paths oriented across jet streams and along jet streams. In all cases, the autocorrelations decreased to zero within 25 to 40 percent of the path length, indicating that the distance considered (length of the data sample) is important in determining the shape of the autocorrelation function. Spectral computations showed that only a small portion of the variance lies in the mesoscale range--i.e., in wavelengths smaller than approximately 200 nm. (Author).

Book Description
The objectives of the American Meteorological Society are "the development and dissemination of knowledge of meteorology in all its phases and applications, and the advancement of its professional ideals." The organization of the Society took place in affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science at Saint Louis, Missouri, December 29, 1919, and its incorporation, at Washington, D. C., January 21, 1920. The work of the Society is carried on by the Bulletin, the Journal, and Meteorological Monographs, by papers and discussions at meetings of the Society, through the offices of the Secretary and the Executive Secretary, and by correspondence. All of the Americas are represented in the membership of the Society as well as many foreign countries.

Book Description
Anyone who has experienced turbulence in flight knows that it is usually not pleasant, and may wonder why this is so difficult to avoid. The book includes papers by various aviation turbulence researchers and provides background into the nature and causes of atmospheric turbulence that affect aircraft motion, and contains surveys of the latest techniques for remote and in situ sensing and forecasting of the turbulence phenomenon. It provides updates on the state-of-the-art research since earlier studies in the 1960s on clear-air turbulence, explains recent new understanding into turbulence generation by thunderstorms, and summarizes future challenges in turbulence prediction and avoidance.
