This study aimed to synthesize the scattered sources of information available on the 3-year, technically oriented Fachhochschulen type of higher education in the Federal Republic of Germany. Organized into six sections, the book starts with a review of the organization of the higher education system including the trend towards a unitary system, the establishment of the comprehensives and the Fachhochschulen, institutional patterns, options for qualified school leavers, higher education objectives, and administrative and legal arrangements. The second section examines course content and organization including entrance qualifications and admissions, duration of studies, practical periods, certification, and curricular innovation. A third section seeks to assess the prestige of institutional types in particular the Fachhochschulen versus the universities. Section four provides a statistical overview in the form of tables with detailed explanation. The fifth section treats teachers in the Fachhochschulen as they compare to the staff at universities qualitatively, and with regard to career, status and duties beyond their major functions. The concluding section takes a look at the past and future of the Fachhochschulen, in particular the difficulties this type of higher education faces due to the societal environment in West Germany which continues to regard the traditional university education as best. This open access book provides a systematic overview of experiences with Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) and undergraduate research (UR) in German universities, covering both research universities (Universitäten) and universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen). Divided into three parts, the book starts with the principles and common practices of IBL/UR at all universities. Part Two discusses the implementation of IBL/UR for twenty-one individual disciplines, ranging from architecture to theology. Part Three discusses the potential of IBL/UR in relation to several topics including diversity, digitalisation, different forms of universities, and the national job market. The book summarises the project of the German network of UR, comprising approximately 50 universities, and results of a national initiative called Qualitätspakt Lehre which is intended to improve teaching at German universities. Today IBL and UR are essential parts of high-impact education strategies for universities around the world. In his university reform plans of the early 19th century, Wilhelm von Humboldt introduced Inquiry-Based Teaching and Learning as the core principle of the modern research university in Germany, as well as worldwide. IBL was re-discovered in the German university reform initiatives of the 1960s. Since then, IBL has been applied in teachers' education in German universities. The book presents IBL/UR experience as complementary to what is usually presented in English-speaking academia. In Germany, IBL/UR is applied broadly throughout the social sciences and planning, but not in the core sciences, whereas in the US undergraduate research is common in the sciences but less so in the social sciences. Moreover, in Germany, IBL/UR is often linked to applied and community-oriented research — something that is just emerging in the US.

Even if in most countries non-university higher education institutions did not have originally a research mandate, it is well known that in most cases these institutions have progressively developed research activities and, at least in some countries, the State now has recognized the research role of these institutions and provided support and funding. Moreover, in many countries the role of research in polytechnics, ‘fachhochschulen’, ‘hogescholen’, university colleges, etc is on the political agenda. Despite the importance of the issue, there are very few in-depth studies of research in the non-university sector. These studies show that the development of research in these institutions leads to quite complex interactions with universities, both in the sense of convergence (academic drift) and/or of differentiation of a specific research mandate oriented towards the regional economy. Therefore, this book aims to fill this gap by first analysing a number of transversal issues related to the research mission of these institutions. This book offers a comprehensive empirical analysis of educational inequalities and their consequences on individual labour market outcomes for men and women in France and Germany, two countries with different education systems. Using microdata of either country, the analyses mainly rely on econometric methods. After a detailed comparison of the French and the German education systems, the social determinants of school and post-school attainment are analysed. Then, the extent to which education reduces the unemployment risk is examined, distinguishing between risk of entering unemployment, unemployment duration and recurrence of unemployment episodes. Finally, evidence is given on the impact of education on individual earnings prospects.

In 1991, three members of HMI visited the then Federal Republic of Germany to learn how young people interested in becoming designers and engineers are prepared through the ages of 14-19 in the German educational system. The visit concentrated on the federal state of Bavaria and focused on issues which are of current interest in England.
