Book Description
Excerpt from Structural Framework of the Mississippi Embayment of Southern Illinois The structural framework of the embayment area of southern Illinois is complex. The embayment strata have a regional dip to the south toward the center of the embay ment trough, whereas the underlying Paleozoic rocks have a regional dip to the northeast toward the Illinois Basin and away from the Ozark Dome and Pascola Arch. In addition, the Paleozoic rocks are broken by numerous northeast trending faults that extend from the illinois-kentucky Fluorspar District southwestward apparently passing beneath the embayment sediments. Based on subsurface data, several northeast-trending faults are postulated within the study area and their locations are shown on the sub-cre taceous geologic map (fig. Some of the faults can be observed in outcrop north of the study area in Pope and Hardin Counties. The faults are nearly vertical and have as much as feet of displacement.
