Fatigue of Structures and Materials
Author: J. Schijve
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402068085
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 627
Book Description
Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

An Improved Method of Collocation for the Stress Analysis of Cracked Plates with Various Shaped Boundaries
Author: J. C. Newman
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Collocation methods
Languages : en
Pages : 52
Book Description
An improved method of boundary collocation was developed and applied to the two-dimensional stress analysis of cracks emanating from, or in the vicinity of, holes or boundaries of various shapes. The solutions, presented in terms of the stress-intensity factor, were based on the complex variable method of Muskhelishvili and a modified boundary-collocation method. The complex-series stress functions developed for simply and multiply connected regions containing cracks were constructed so that the boundary conditions on the crack surfaces are satisfied exactly. The conditions on the other boundaries were satisfied approximately by the modified collocation method. This improved method gave more rapid numerical convergence than other collocation techniques investigated.

Analysis and Mechanics
Author: D.M.R. Taplin
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483279618
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 563
Book Description
Analysis and Mechanics contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture held at the University of Waterloo in Canada in June 1977. The conference provided a forum for discussing fracture mechanics and analysis involving a wide variety of materials, particularly large structures. Topics covered range from crack growth to dynamic processes and stress intensity factors, along with fracture in nonlinear systems. Comprised of 64 chapters, this volume begins by describing a numerical approach for modeling stable crack growth and fracture criteria. The reader is then introduced to the continuum theory of dislocations and its application to fracture mechanics; initiation of crack propagation in ductile structures; and finite element analysis of an impact test. Subsequent chapters focus on stress and crack-displacement intensity factors in elastodynamics; plastic fracture analysis of a cracked cylinder under displacement controlled loading; energy considerations in dynamic crack propagation and arrest; and the use of the J integral to measure the resistance of mild steel to slow stable crack growth. This book will be of interest to mechanical and structural engineers.

Engineering Solid Mechanics
Author: Abdel-Rahman A. Ragab
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849316074
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 948
Book Description
Engineering Solid Mechanics bridges the gap between elementary approaches to strength of materials and more advanced, specialized versions on the subject. The book provides a basic understanding of the fundamentals of elasticity and plasticity, applies these fundamentals to solve analytically a spectrum of engineering problems, and introduces advanced topics of mechanics of materials - including fracture mechanics, creep, superplasticity, fiber reinforced composites, powder compacts, and porous solids. Text includes: stress and strain, equilibrium, and compatibility elastic stress-strain relations the elastic problem and the stress function approach to solving plane elastic problems applications of the stress function solution in Cartesian and polar coordinates Problems of elastic rods, plates, and shells through formulating a strain compatibility function as well as applying energy methods Elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics Plastic and creep deformation Inelastic deformation and its applications This book presents the material in an instructive manner, suitable for individual self-study. It emphasizes analytical treatment of the subject, which is essential for handling modern numerical methods as well as assessing and creating software packages. The authors provide generous explanations, systematic derivations, and detailed discussions, supplemented by a vast variety of problems and solved examples. Primarily written for professionals and students in mechanical engineering, Engineering Solid Mechanics also serves persons in other fields of engineering, such as aerospace, civil, and material engineering.
