The Story of Nuncomar and the Impeachment of Sir Elijah Impey, Vol. 2 of 2
Author: Sir James Fitzjames Stephen
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781330378526
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 348
Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Nuncomar and the Impeachment of Sir Elijah Impey, Vol. 2 of 2 In the preceding chapters I have related in the fullest detail every incident which I have been able to discover connected with Nunc Omar's charges against Hastings, the charge of forgery made against Nunkumar, his trial and execution, and the view taken of those transactions at the time when they happened. I now come to consider the charges made against Impey on account of his connection with these events, and to express my own opinion upon them. Before entering upon this discussion it will be necessary to describe the manner in which the charges came to be made. The questions relating to Nunkumar were a part only of a far wider and more intricate quarrel between the Governor-General and Council on the one side, and the Supreme Court on the other. I have given a full account of it in the following chapters; but I have thought it more convenient to finish the story of Nuncomar before going into it. It is a very intricate story, and its details do not possess the picturesque interest which attaches to Nuncomar's case. Book Description
This interdisciplinary study of legal and literary narratives argues that the novel's particular power to represent the interior life of its characters both challenges the law's definitions of criminal responsibility and reaffirms them.
