Book Description
"The availability of zero-emission fuels infrastructure, including onshore electric power supply, will be key to enable greenhouse gas (GHG) zero-emission vessels and increase the competitiveness of IWT as a whole, at a time when other modes of transport are reducing their ecological footprint. The objective of the TG is in line with the declaration of PIANC, namely developing approaches to decarbonise the operation of port and navigation infrastructure (i.e. move to GHG zero emissions), whilst at the same time enabling the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from vessels by providing the necessary facilities, infrastructure and, where appropriate, incentives. For this purpose, TG 234 was tasked to identify knowledge gaps and major challenges that need to be urgently addressed and advise PIANC on further actions."--Introduction.

Book Description
"One of the motives for setting up [this report] was the lack of internationally accepted guidelines for inland waterway dimensions, in contrast to regulations for seagoing ships. Therefore, there is a need for adequate new guidelines, especially on minimum horizontal dimensions of fairways, lock approaches or bridge openings, to support several new waterway improvement projects. Another reason to update existing knowledge of waterway design arises from changes in the vessel fleet, especially with a growing number of longer, wider, deeper draughted and stronger powered vessels and the consequent affects on the dimensions of the design vessels."--Introduction.

Book Description
"On 16 July 2016, WG 179 sent a questionnaire to all PIANC National Sections to collect information about the applied classification for inland waterways in their countries and their suggestions for modernising the current ECMT (1992) and UN/ECE classifications. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the WG concluded that in Europe the connected waterways share a common classification. However, inland navigation and the inland waterways fleet in other countries is rather different from that in Europe. The WG started an investigation into developments in the inland waterways fleet in Europe and in particular into developments in waterway channel dimensions since the publication of previous classifications based on the proposal presented by PIANC WG 9 (1990)."--Introduction.

Book Description
Inland waterways are a host for a mode of transport that is not as visible to the general public or as used as it once was. It is, however, generally perceived to be very important to our freight transport system today, although a closer look into the inland waterway transport system rebuts this perception and reveals the strengths and opportunities of this mode of transportation. This book gives the reader a thorough understanding of the current role of inland waterway transport as a freight transport system and its conditions. Drawing on case studies from across Europe, this text explores the economic, logistic, and technological and policy issues related to inland waterway transport and the challenges that changes in these areas present to this transport mode. It also explores the strategies for the inland waterway transport sector to secure and then enlarge its role in the future of freight transport. Inland Waterway Transport will be an invaluable source for students and researchers of transport studies. In addition, the book will be useful to policymakers and practitioners involved in its development. It may also appeal to wider readers with an interest in the fascinating business of inland waterway transport.
