Book Description
Excerpt from Windows a Book About Stained Painted Glass A stained glass window is itself the best possible illustration of the difference it makes whether we look at a thing from this side or from that. Goethe used this particular image in one of his little parables, comparing poems to painted windows, dark and dull from the market-place, bright with colour and alive with meaning only when we have crossed the threshold of the church. Book Description
Excerpt from Stained Glass Stained glass, as the term is used, is taken to include also painting upon glass. As a matter of fact, glass staining and glass painting are two quite different things. To build up a mosaic with pieces of coloured glass, each separate tint cut out of a separate sheet of potmetal, is one thing; to paint upon a sheet of white or coloured glass is another thing altogether. 'in fact, they are not merely two different ways but two opposite ways of arriving at a result. But there is this excuse for grouping them (as it is the custom to do) under one title, that from very early days the two processes of work were used together. Book Description
Excerpt from Stained Glass: Of the Middle Ages in England and France The work of the countries and period I have chosen is of course the most important of all. There is beauty, it is true, in much Renaissance work (only a prig could resist the gaiety and charm of the windows of St. Vincent at Rouen), but it is for the most part beauty achieved in spite of, and not through, the material. There is beautiful mediaeval work in Germany and Italy, but the Germans, till the Renaissance, clung to a rather lifeless and archaic convention, and the Italians were hampered by their greater knowledge of painting. The art has found its noblest expression in the work of the great school which for nearly the whole of the Middle Ages was common to France and England. Book Description
Excerpt from Stained Glass as an Art In the first place I desire to express my sincere and cordial thanks to my friends Sir Edward Burne Jones and Mr. William Blake Richmond, for their courtesy in allowing me to reproduce some of their designs, and thus to give specimens of the best work in stained glass of the nineteenth century. In the next place I must explain why the direct illustrations of my text are taken from my own work only. Considerations _of convenience and of good taste determined me to take this course. I am quite convinced of a general accord between my brother artists and myself as to the main principles laid down in this treatise, but it is more than probable that we may differ on minor points; and I might find myself quoting some features in their designs in illustration of an argument of my own, with which they might not Wholly agree; I might read some thing into their work which was not really in their intention. On the other hand, there _are some few matters about which we do not absolutely agree, and by employing my friends' designs in direct illustration of my principles, I might appear to be guilty of an inconsistency, unless I adopted the objectionable alternative of calling attention to the points in question for the purpose of adverse criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from Stained Glass: A Handbook on the Art of Stained and Painted Glass, Its Origin and Development From the Time of Charlemagne to Its Decadence, (850-1650 A. D.) Minute investigation into the history of this art seemed to me at first safer in the hands of English and Continental authorities, yet in the course of time I was confronted with so many puzzling details and antiquarian prob lems that I started to look into the mysteries of this half-forgotten art. I have succeeded in uncovering the secrets of the brilliant col ors of mediaeval Stained glass, thus striking at the root of the problems of an art that has the minerals of the earth as its source and medium.
