Book Description
In its familiar translations, the Stabat Mater is a favourite hymn of English-speaking Catholics. But what if these versions are not true to the original Latin? What did the author really say? Why did he use a particular poetic style? Who was he anyway? After seven hundred years, these and other questions about this much loved hymn remain unresolved. Probable authors include three Popes, three Saints and one layman who, though he was imprisoned and excommunicated by a Pope, is perhaps the most likely. Jacopone da Todi's fascinating life story includes the tragic death of his wife, his crazed ramblings in the Umbrian hills, his joining the extreme ascetical faction of the Franciscan Order, the Spirituali, and his creative work as one of the great Italian poets of the Middle Ages. All this is played out against the background of the horrific events of the Black Death, the plague that wiped out millions of Europeans, and the subsequent pogrom that wiped out most of Europe's Jews. Desmond Fisher also provides a new translation of the poem, which he sees as more accurate, adhering to the original metre and rhythm, and more genuinely reflecting its emotional mood. He compares this against four of the most well-known existing English translations. His own new Stabat Mater is quite different, challenging our preconceptions.

Book Description
Students of Christian spirituality often have an ambivalent attitude to primary sources from the past. On the one hand they are intrigued by the mysterious ‘otherness’ of their and the promise that this very ‘otherness’ my take them into exciting uncharted territory. On the other hand, they lack the confidence to navigate this territory, so that what begins as strangely intriguing can quickly become ‘just too weird.’ The SCM Reader in Christian Spirituality not only offers a collection of readings from the classic texts of Christian spirituality but also gives the reader a way into these texts that enables them to be received as living and relevant for both personal spirituality and ministry. An introductory section guides the student through the process and offers techniques for approaching these often ancient texts. The Reader then presents readings from the patristic to the end of the early modern period, encompassing both the Eastern and Western church traditions, grouped around key themes, and including extensive notes and contextual material.

Book Description
Hymns are more than beautiful musical compositions; they provide us with a heightened language for praising and speaking to God, all while teaching us theology that reflects both the depth and complexity of Our Lord. Sacred hymns in our day have given way to “fifth-rate poetry set to fourth-rate music,” as C.S. Lewis once remarked. At times, the music used in worship can make us feel as though the culture is usurping the Church rather than being transfigured by it. There is a clear and present need to resurrect those distinctively different songs with a distinctively different vocabulary for people who want to live distinctive lives as followers of Christ. In these pages, Fr. George William Rutler introduces and reflects upon dozens of the greatest hymns written from the earliest years of the Church through the Twentieth Century. The text and composition of each hymn is included, as well as inspiring accounts of their authors and composers, fascinating stories and historical events connected with them, and notes on the significant contributions each one made to theology and music. Fr. Rutler has recovered here a rich musical legacy that will help us to give glory to our God who is Lord of all.

Book Description
From its beginnings in the Bible, Christian hymnology has fulfilled three functions -- praise, recital and teaching of the Myth, and collective and personal adoration as well as the foundation and worship of the church. In Hymns and the Christian Myth, Lionel Adey demonstrates that over the centuries shifts emphasizing particular elements of the Christian faith accord with the interests and concerns of the times in which the hymns were composed.

Book Description
Exploding the assumption that black women's only important musical contributions have been in folk, jazz, and pop Helen Walker-Hill's unique study provides a carefully researched examination of the history and scope of musical composition by African American women composers from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Focusing on the effect of race, gender, and class, From Spirituals to Symphonies notes the important role played by individual personalities and circumstances in shaping this underappreciated category of American art. The study also provides in-depth exploration of the backgrounds, experiences, and musical compositions of eight African American women including Margaret Bonds, Undine Smith Moore, and Julia Perry, who combined the techniques of Western art music with their own cultural traditions and individual gifts. Despite having gained national and international recognition during their lifetimes, the contributions of many of these women are today forgotten.
