A comprehensive rate equation model for a pulsed laser pumped by the H2(D2)-F2 reaction is described. This computer simulation incorporates up to 216 kinetic reactions to describe the laser medium, which is assumed to be homogeneous and contained in a Fabry-Perot optical cavity. The first fifteen vibrational-rotational P-branch transitions from each of the lowest ten vibrational bands are monitored for possible laser action. The distinctive features incorporated in this model include: (1) the elimination of the gain-equals-loss assumption, so that it is possible to predict cavity transients and to observe gain-intensity interactions; (2) a detailed model of the Lorentz broadening, including V, J dependence, as well as distinction between various perturbing species; (3) multiquantum HF (DF) self-deactivation, which in the HF case was found important to achieve good agreement between theory and experiment. Comparisons of the prediction of this model with several small-scale experiments have indicated generally good agreement (typically within approx. 20%). (Author).

A computer modeling study of pulsed H2+F2 and D2+F2 chemical lasers has been conducted. This work was directed toward understanding the role of kinetic rotational relaxation and vibrational-rotational relaxation mechanisms in HF and DF lasers. This study resulted in very comprehensive computer models that could predict spectral characteristics of pulsed laser performance using kinetics rate equation data and experimental conditions. In addition, experiments were conducted on a flash initiated pulsed H2+F2 laser facility to generate data to compare with the models developed in this study. Models were also developed that demonstrated the performance of pulsed laser driven amplifiers and optical resonance transfer lasers. Finally, simple models were constructed that permit efficient prediction of pulse energy and pulse power. (Author).

A computer simulation of a pulsed HF laser pumped by the H2 + F2 chain reaction is presented. A chemical kinetic model encompassing 68 reactions is used to approximate the reacting mixture contained within an optical cavity. For each vibrational level, a Boltzmann distribution for the rotational levels is assumed with lasing on the vibrational band at line center of the transition having maximum gain. An analysis of cavity and chemical mechanisms yields a simple relationship between the pumping and depletion rates of the vibrational levels. This relationship is used to make a comprehensive study of the effects of cavity and chemical parameters on the laser pulse. The effect of changes in uncertain chemical reaction rate coefficients is assessed. (Author).
