Poetic Medley of Life's Incidents
Author: Alwyn W. Westfiled

ISBN: 9781425752811
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
These varying verses are reflections of my experiences and life encounters. They are meant to be shared with fellow human beings who will realize that they can identify with some occurrences that have taken place or are taking place, whether in their lives or the outside world. While teaching history and government, I have observed the difficulties some students encountered in dealing with deductive reasoning and cause and effect relationships. This led me to begin summarizing historical events in a rhythmic style. Hence, I wrote the verses about world affairs and American History. I also dealt with teaching experiences. I looked at life and wondered, what is it all about? What does it entail for us humans? So one day, while on my break from teaching, I wrote "A Life Journey Seeking", this is both a symbolic, physical and spiritual experience of our existence on this earth. There are various symbolism that cover a broad spectrum of life encounters. Hence, this is my favorite poem. Some verses are very serious, while others are satires reflecting the dilemma of an enslaved or colonized people or even confused state of mind resulting in questionable actions. Some are observed occurrences in nature. The follies of some of our actions are teased and the consequences highlighted. The verses are not meant to be didactic; however, they can help us to reflect on our life and occurrence that have and are taking place around us.

Between the Temple and the Cave
Author: Angela T. McAuliffe
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773568484
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
Drawing on a wide variety of newly available source material, Angela McAuliffe examines the roots of Pratt's religious attitudes, including his strict Methodist upbringing in Newfoundland and his plans to enter the ministry. She explores Pratt's early prose and unpublished poetry, including his theses on demonology and Pauline eschatology and the unpublished poem "Clay," to trace the origins of religious ideas and motifs that occur in his later work. McAuliffe focuses on key motifs in Pratt's poetry, such as his image of a distant and formidable God, his apocalyptic vision of the world, and his belief in determinism and fate. She concludes that the diversity of religious positions attributed to Pratt and the image of God that emerges from his poetry are facets of the ironic vision of a man of twentieth-century sensibility who wrestled with God and sought a medium of expression equal to his themes.

Milton's Modernities
Author: Feisal G. Mohamed
Publisher: Northwestern University Press
ISBN: 0810135353
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 521
Book Description
The phrase “early modern” challenges readers and scholars to explore ways in which that period expands and refines contemporary views of the modern. The original essays in Milton’s Modernities undertake such exploration in the context of the work of John Milton, a poet whose prodigious energies simultaneously point to the past and future. Bristling with insights on Milton’s major works, Milton’s Modernities offers fresh perspectives on the thinkers central to our theorizations of modernity: from Lucretius and Spinoza, Hegel and Kant, to Benjamin and Deleuze. At the volume's core is an embrace of the possibilities unleashed by current trends in philosophy, variously styled as the return to ethics, or metaphysics, or religion. These make all the more visible Milton’s dialogues with later modernity, dialogues that promise to generate much critical discussion in early modern studies and beyond. Such approaches necessarily challenge many prevailing assumptions that have guided recent Milton criticism—assumptions about context and periodization, for instance. In this way, Milton’s Modernities powerfully broadens the historical archive beyond the materiality of events and things, incorporating as well intellectual currents, hybrids, and insights.
