Book Description
Excerpt from Special Libraries Directory The Special Libraries Association in 1918 appointed a Census Committee to make a survey of the present extent of the special library movement in the United States. This Committee sent an article describing the contemplated survey to the leading scientific and trade periodicals, which article was accorded widespread publicity. The thanks of the Association are due to all publishers who assisted in this task, particularly to Mr. P. M. Feiker of the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company (since appointed assistant to the Hon. Herbert Hoover, Secretary of Commerce), to Mr. H. W. Wilson of the H. W. Wilson Company, and to Mr. A. I. Findley of "The Iron Age." As a result of these notices the Chairman of the Census Committee, Mr. William F.Jacob, (Librarian, General Electric Company, Schenectady, N. Y.) received a considerable amount of data descriptive of special libraries in various parts of the country. The membership of the Census Committee of the Special Libraries Association was as follows: Mr. William F.Jacob, Chairman, Dr. John A. Lapp, Mr. Guy E. Marion, Miss Alice J. Gates. In submitting its report at the 1920 Convention the Census Committee pointed out the need for a more careful regional canvass to locate hitherto undiscovered special libraries. This need had already been recognized by the Boston Special Libraries Association and a Committee of that body, of which Mr. Daniel N.Handy was Chairman, published in February, 1920, a "Directory of Libraries and Other Sources of Information in Boston and Vicinity." The Boston precedent was soon followed by the New York Special Libraries Association. About twelve months later Miss Rebecca B.Rankin, President of the New York "Special Libraries Association, published a classified list of the Special Libraries in New York City," in The Library Journal (issue of January 15, 1921)which was later distributed in reprint form. The same magazine a few months later published a list of the "Libraries of Philadelphia and its Environs' (reprinted separately) compiled by the Special Libraries Council of Philadelphia and Vicinity, of which Miss Helen M.Rankin is Secretary.
