Book Description
From its beginning as a tourist destination in the preaCivil War era, Tallulah Falls has drawn large numbers of travelers and adventurers. The earliest written account of Tallulah, published in 1819 in the Georgia Journal, stated, athe cataract of Niagara and its great whirlpool and banks, is the only superior natural curiosity to the Rapids of Tallulah, that I have ever seen.a Soon tourists were flocking to the area, and by the 1840s, groups of visitors were common. With the arrival of the railroad in 1882, hotels and businesses sprang up, leading to an increase in the number of visitors. Quite naturally, photographers have long been drawn to the lush natural beauty of the area, as well as the wealthy tourists and the hotels that catered to them.

Book Description
"This first of two volumes on North Carolina women chronicles the influence and accomplishments of individual women from the pre-Revolutionary period through the early 20th century. They represent a range of social and economic backgrounds, political stances, areas of influence, and geographical regions within the state. Even though North Carolina remained mostly rural until well into the twentieth century and the lives of most women centered on farm, family, and church, Gillespie and McMillen note that the state's people "exhibited a progressive streak that positively influenced women." Public funds were set aside to advance statewide education, private efforts after the Civil War led to the founding of numerous black schools and colleges, and in 1891 the General Assembly chartered the State Normal and Industrial School (later UNC-G) as one of the first publicly funded colleges for white women. By the late 19th century, as several essays in this volume reveal, education played a pivotal role in the lives of many white and black women. It inspired their activism and involvement in a world beyond their traditional domestic sphere"--

Book Description
In My Fashion will delight those intrigued by the world of high fashion and its history. From the heady days in Paris at Christian Dior's "New Look" collection, to the shows, parties, and lifestyles of such luminaries as Cristobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, Norman Norell, Emilio Pucci, Hubert de Givenchy, and Bill Blass, the reader witnesses the glamour, the glitz, and often the frenzy of this world of flair, imagination, and force of personality. In this book Kent also provides a unique education in the production of fashion shows, which he elevated to an art form. Through Kents vision, fashion becomes theater. Two actual show scripts are included in this book. With an artists eye and passion, he reminds the reader that, as women have always known, memories are often indelibly attached to ones favorite clothes. This articulate and witty distillation is an exquisite pleasure for the elegant Mr. Kents many admirers, and a treat for anyone who is interested in the history of our time, in the seeds of creativity, and in the power of style.

The bestselling author of Pledged returns with a groundbreaking look at the pressure to achieve faced by America's teens In Pledged, Alexandra Robbins followed four college girls to produce a riveting narrative that read like fiction. Now, in The Overachievers, Robbins uses the same captivating style to explore how our high-stakes educational culture has spiraled out of control. During the year of her ten-year reunion, Robbins goes back to her high school, where she follows heart-tuggingly likeable students including "AP" Frank, who grapples with horrifying parental pressure to succeed; Audrey, whose panicked perfectionism overshadows her life; Sam, who worries his years of overachieving will be wasted if he doesn't attend a name-brand college; Taylor, whose ambition threatens her popular girl status; and The Stealth Overachiever, a mystery junior who flies under the radar. Robbins tackles teen issues such as intense stress, the student and teacher cheating epidemic, sports rage, parental guilt, the black market for study drugs, and a college admissions process so cutthroat that students are driven to suicide and depression because of a B. With a compelling mix of fast-paced narrative and fascinating investigative journalism, The Overachievers aims both to calm the admissions frenzy and to expose its escalating dangers.
