Excerpt from Country Life Education Success had hardly been attained in collegiate courses in agriculture when secondary schools for agricultural education began successfully to develop. In 1888 the University of Minnesota began an experiment at developing an agricultural high-school course. This experiment is of none the less value anal of all the greater interest because it was an outgrowth of the failure of agricultural courses of collegiate grade to gain a foothold in a State university. Just as Congress by its landgrant act forced colleges of agriculture upon the State, this agricultural high-school movement was injected into the school system upon the initiative of farmers and business men. At present between thirty and forty agricultural high schools have been established in the United States. In one line of country-lit'e education school men and nonschool men have together taken up the practical in school work. Farmers and educators together have entered upon the development of rural schools so as to have them cover agriculture and home economics as well as the Three R's. Thus the school people are especially championing the consolidation of rural schools, and the farmers are laying stress upon the introduction of agriculture into all rural schools. Both classes are rap idly coming to favor both propositions. The farmers are coming to see that agriculture can not be successfully introduced into the one-room rural schools, and the teachers are coming to see that agriculture and home economies are to have very strong positions in the primary country school curriculum alongside the Three R's. Excerpt from How the Land-Grant Colleges Are Preparing Special Teachers of Agriculture During the recent past there has developed an increased general interest in agriculture. In the early years of the period of most marked increase in this interest a demand arose for the teaching of agriculture in the elementary and secondary schools. This was quickly followed by a demand that agriculture be made a department of instruction in the secondary schools, and that the teacher of this subject be specially trained for the distinct duty of teaching agriculture. Meanwhile the popularity of agricultural extension work had been developed. It was soon seen that this new type of teacher must be equipped to teach agriculture as a specialty, to adapt this teaching to a full four-year course in the secondary school, and also to teach in the rural school and in the elementary grades of the town or city school, and, in addition, to perform the functions of an extension worker for that portion of the community not in attendance upon school. The need of a teacher so specifically and yet so broadly trained immediately raised the question of the need of a suitable institution in which to train him. The adaptability of the normal school to the giving of an elementary knowledge of agriculture to those teachers whose major work is the teaching of other subjects has been shown (National Education Association Proceedings, 1913, pp. 516-21), but the training of a specialist in agriculture who is to teach that subject almost exclusively requires a different type of institution. A people who had become accustomed to depending upon the land-grant colleges for their needs regarding agriculture naturally looked to those institutions for this new type of teacher. The land-grant colleges, with their innumerable and vital points of public contact and with a well-developed policy, not only of sensing the public wishes, but of responding to them, evolved steadily, but quite rapidly, facilities for training these special teachers of agriculture. To learn how these institutions as a class are performing this function is the purpose of this study. Scope This study is limited to the land-grant colleges, frequently called "agricultural and mechanical colleges" or "colleges of agriculture and mechanic arts," established by the Federal Land Grant of 1862 and subsequent statutes. Excerpt from Outlines of Agricultural Economics: A Class-Book of Questions and Problems This little book appears in fulfilment of the promise made a year ago that there would be a class-book to accompany Agricultural Economics. In fact, these questions and exercises should be regarded as an integral part of the earlier volume for all purposes of teaching and study. They should be bound together except for the undue size which would result and the possibility that some instructors might desire to use this class book in connection with other materials. For this latter reason the writer has aimed to make the questions sufficiently general in character to be of value to classes using other textbooks than his own and especially to instructors or classes in marketing, rural credits, and similar special topics. While the ques tions bear in the main upon the particular matter presented in the companion volume, specific references have been avoided in nearly all cases. The writer disclaims any pretense of offering a bibliography of agricultural economics. The lists of additional references appended to the various chapters are merely what their name implies - references added to those already suggested in the footnotes of the various selections. Some of these represent valuable material which has appeared since the publication of the earlier volume; others are works which for one reason or another were not used in the compilation of the source book, but which seem to the writer to be of value for further reading on special topics or in the preparation of term papers. Likewise, the lists of special topics do not aim at completeness, but are intended, by a few concrete suggestions, to stimulate the student to discover suitable subjects of his own. Besides the use which the writer has already made of this material, a part of the questions have been used at the University of Illinois by Dr. Charles L. Stewart, from Whom numerous helpful suggestions have been received. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics This book is intended for the student and the farmer inter ested in the study of those economic principles which underlie the effective organization of the farm, and for the statesman interested in establishing laws and institutions for the develop ment of agriculture. The subjects treated correspond to those studies grouped under the head of Farm Management in some colleges and under the head of Agricultural Economics in others. From the author's point of view these two terms as used at the present time cover essentially the same subject matter so far as they relate to the economics of production on the indi vidual farm, but he believes that the latter term is much the broader, including also the problems of marketing, land eco nomics, farm finance, and farm life. The matter here presented is the result of a gradual develop ment of twenty years of study in this field. Its publication marks the close of seventeen years of teaching of agricultural economics by the author in the University of Wisconsin, where he first gave a course to the short-course students in the winter of 1902 - 1903, at which time a Syllabus of Lectures on Agricul tural Economics was printed for the use of his class. In 1905 An Introduction to the Study of Agricultural Economics, containing thirteen chapters, was published, the main points of which have been included in the present volume.
