Book Description
Beginning with prehumans running down prey, this book describes how ancient, medieval and modern runners have come to run ever faster. Writers of antiquity left few detailed accounts of running but in the early 1800s detailed accounts of running feats and matches appeared in newspapers, journals and books. Nineteenth century pioneers like George Seward, Harry Hutchens, Walter George and Bernie Wefers are here given long-deserved recognition. The six-day Go-as-You-Please races of the 1870s and 1880s--featuring running's first great female performer, Amy Howard--are discussed. Twentieth century luminaries Helen Stephens, Jesse Owens, Paavo Nurmi, Emil Zatopek, Bob Hayes, Abebe Bikila and Joan Benoit-Samuelson are included, along with the Bunion Derby races of 1928-1929. New material for this revised and expanded second edition includes coverage of the 1970s running boom, women marathon pioneers, the impact of drugs on running, and the feats of 21st century runners such as Usain Bolt, Paula Radcliffe and Haile Gebrselassie.

Book Description
This book celebrates the lives of the students and former students of Southend High School for Girls during its first one hundred years. Through their words we are able to experience key events of the twentieth century and come to understand how much has been achieved by them. In 1913 women did not even have the vote, including the highly educated and formidable Head Mistress. One year later World War I broke out. Sister Mary Ruth Brewster, on her hundredth birthday in 2005, wrote from South Africa about the air raids, 'we had to get out of our desks, sit cross-legged on the floor on the side away from the window, with our big atlases open and held over our heads.' In World War II the Old Girls faced even more dangers, including imprisonment by the Germans in France and internment by the Japanese in China. Others who went out as teachers and missionaries in the final days of the British Empire also faced dangers from those fighting for their independence. Finally, this would not be a true history of the school without chapters on the uniform, success in sport, and the School Birthday in October with its cards, presents, cakes and celebrations.

Book Description
Continuation of the reference work that originated with Robert Dodsley, written and published each year, which records and analyzes the year’s major events, developments and trends in Great Britain and throughout the world. After 1815 the usual form became a number of chapters on Great Britain, paying particular attention to the proceedings of Parliament, followed by chapters covering other countries in turn, no longer limited to Europe. The expansion of the History came at the expense of the sketches, reviews and other essays so that the nineteenth-century publication ceased to have the miscellaneous character of its eighteenth-century forebear, although poems continued to be included until 1862, and a small number of official papers and other important texts continue to be reproduced.

It describes the change from a rural market town in the mid-nineteenth century to a dormitory town for London after the coming of the railway in 1889. This is the first detailed history of Billericay, packed with original research and a multitude of previously unpublished illustrations from many sources. Book Description
The purpose of this book is to inform with unique sources of documentary evidence a detailed contemporary account of a momentous unsung event in defence of our nation in WWII. For the eager reader or student wishing to add to their knowledge the author has created an historical reference work. This largely unknown part of WW II history was summed up by the great A. P. Herbert (Sir Alan Herbert) as “A Grateful Nation Soon Forgot”. AP, as he was known, was involved in these historic events throughout the war. From 1939-1945 The Naval Control Service (NCS) controlled vital convoy operations from Southend. Many WW1 Battle of Jutland veterans descended on Southend as volunteers for convoy work. These men of experience included Admirals and Vice Admirals who commanded the earliest supply convoys. Many of the NCS team in residence were well known nationally distinguished men and women. Southend’s longest sea pier in the world, stretches for one and one third miles out into the Thames Estuary and has at its end a deep water harbour. At the gateway to The Thames and North Sea it was ideal for convoy operations. The Germans were aware of this and would come to destroy the facility and close The Thames in a night bombing raid by the Luftwaffe on 22nd November 1939. They had not expected the foresight of Capt. John Pelham Champion CBE., DSO., RN in command of the NCS. By his hunch in guessing when they would come, the Pier was prepared with an armed defence. Not only was the German plan thwarted but the Thames to London stayed open for the duration of the war against the stated prediction of Winston Churchill.
