Book Description
This book is based on chapters in a series of four books from the first five years (2002-2006) of the Language of Instruction in Tanzania and South Africa (LOITASA) project. LOITASA is a NUFU-funded (Norwegian University Fund) project which began in January 2002 and will continue through to the end of 2011. The chapters reflect the state of the research at the end of the first five years of LOITASA in 2006 and were selected by reviewers independent of the project. The selection of chapters brought together bring to the forefront the dilemmas facing developing countries as they seek to position themselves in an increasingly interconnected global system, while at the same time maintaining a sense of national and regional identity. The chapters in this collection reflect both positive outcomes when the medium of instruction is a widely-known language as well as the challenges of mother tongue instruction in countries where historically a powerful language like English has dominated. The four LOITASA books in this series from which the chapters in this book are drawn are: ●Language of instruction in Tanzania and South Africa (LOITASA) published by E & D Ltd, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania ●Researching the language of instruction in Tanzania and South Africa published by African Minds, Cape Town South Africa ●LOITASA Research in Progress published by KAD Associates, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. ●Focus on fresh data on the language of instruction debate in Tanzania and South Africa published by African Minds, Cape Town, South Africa. All four books are edited by Birgit Brock-Utne, the Norwegian project leader of the LOITASA project; Zubeida Desai, the South African project leader and Martha Qorro, who is on the project steering committee in Tanzania.

Book Description
Ethiopia Highlights, the only stand-alone guide to Ethiopia's top visitor attractions, hones in on the most alluring historical and natural attractions of a vast country that ranks among the most scenically and culturally varied destinations in Africa. It condenses the key contents of Bradt's more comprehensive guide to Ethiopia - written by the same author and praised as one of the best guidebooks ever published - into a portable but informative travel companion for first-time visitors on an organized tour to Ethiopia. It concentrates on the renowned northern historical circuit, where more than 100 magnificent mediaeval rock-hewn churches vie for attention with the UNESCO restored castles of Gondar and ancient giant stelae of Axum. Other highlights include the sparkling Rift Valley lakes, the walled Islamic citadel of Harar, the traditional African ethnic cultures of the remote Omo Valley, the forbidding wastes of the Afar region (source of the oldest human fossils ever uncovered) and the green mountainous expanses of Simien and Bale National Parks, with their wealth of unique mammals and birds.

Book Description
In the vast expanse of education, a pervasive issue remains in the marginalization and lack of visibility of individuals with disabilities. Despite a strong desire for inclusivity, recent research suggests that fewer than 5% of children with disabilities in 51 countries across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are enrolled in primary school. This exclusion is not solely in enrollment numbers; even those who manage to attend face learning environments ill-equipped to adapt to their needs, leading to further isolation. Girls with disabilities, in particular, endure heightened vulnerability to abuse, reflecting a systemic failure to provide an environment that fosters equality, dignity, and respect for all. The Handbook of Research on Inclusive and Accessible Education emerges as an inspiration for change, providing a profound solution to the persistent issue of exclusion. The book encapsulates a collective effort to reimagine education. It advocates for a paradigm shift—moving away from the confinement of special schools and towards inclusive, mainstream settings. By addressing controversies, sharing successes, and outlining prospects, the book serves as a comprehensive guide for special school governing bodies, curriculum advisors, university lecturers, and all stakeholders committed to reshaping education.
