An early 10th-century Arabic critic defined poetry formally as "metrical, rhymed, meaningful speech." There are numerous studies of classical Arabic poetry, both pre-modern and modern, that deal with the themes and motifs of poems. Many of these pay scant attention to the formal aspects that distinguish Arabic poetry from prose: metre, rhyme, and other sound patterns. Likewise, there are many treatises and monographs on these formal aspects, but often they are more concerned with theory than with actual poetic practice, and they are rarely interested in the relationships between sounds and meanings. Geert Jan van Gelder investigates these relationships in some detail, being concerned primarily with poetic practice rather than with the classical treatises on metre and rhyme. The introduction discusses what we know about the sounds of Classical Arabic verse, as far as we can tell from written sources. The chapters on metre and rhyme deal with the choices poets make and the consequences of the prosodical restraints. Relatively much attention is given to the oddities and freaks of versification. Another chapter illustrates the various sound patterns devised by poets to shape the verse. Sound and sense often clearly or subtly interact, although it is not claimed that they are always closely related. All Arabic examples and quotations are given in transliteration and are accompanied by translations; furthermore, introductions to Arabic prosody and phonology are provided in appendices.

What makes language beautiful? Arabic Poetics offers an answer to what this pertinent question looked like at the height of the Islamic civilization. In this novel argument, Lara Harb suggests that literary quality depended on the ability of linguistic expression to produce an experience of discovery and wonder in the listener. Analyzing theories of how rhetorical figures, simile, metaphor, and sentence construction are able to achieve this effect of wonder, Harb shows how this aesthetic theory, first articulated at the turn of the eleventh century CE, represented a major paradigm shift from earlier Arabic criticism which based its judgement on criteria of truthfulness and naturalness. In doing so, this study poses a major challenge to the misconception in modern scholarship that Arabic criticism was 'traditionalist' or 'static', exposing an elegant widespread conceptual framework of literary beauty in the post-eleventh-century Islamicate world which is central to poetic criticism, the interpretation of Aristotle's Poetics in Arabic philosophy and the rationale underlying discussions about the inimitability of the Quran.

In Old Arabic poetry from the pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods to the end of the orthodox Caliphate, one theme is the lightning-scene. In this the protagonist asserts that he could not sleep because he saw lightning flashing far away in the sky. The book explores the various functions of this scene, and its relationship with other parts of the poem. This study achieves two main goals. The first sheds light on two important terms connected with Old Arabic poetry: the function and the narration. We see how a certain element can function differently from text to text, and how these different functions influence the narration of a poem and consequently make it - to some degree - idiosyncratic; i.e., a text that differs from other poems that include the same element. The second purpose is to make a comprehensive study of the components, namely the motifs included in the lightning-scenes. Here, the author reaches conclusions regarding whether these components differ significantly from text to text, or whether they are merely repetitions. In other words, this study examines whether the lightning-scenes in themselves are idiosyncratic or - on the contrary - are fossilized and conventional follow long-established poetic traditions.

Unique in pre-twentieth-century Arabic literature for taking the countryside as its central theme, Yūsuf al-Shirbīnī’s Brains Confounded combines a mordant satire on seventeenth-century Egyptian rural society with a hilarious parody of the verse-and-commentary genre so beloved by scholars of his day. In Volume One, al-Shirbīnī describes the three rural “types”—peasant cultivator, village man-of-religion and rural dervish—offering numerous anecdotes testifying to the ignorance, dirtiness, illiteracy, lack of proper religious understanding, and criminality of each. He follows it in Volume Two with a 47-line poem supposedly written by a peasant named Abū Shādūf, who charts the rise and fall of his fortunes and bewails, above all, the lack of access to delicious foods to which his poverty has condemned him. Wielding the scholarly tools of elite literature, al-Shirbīnī responds to the poem with derision and ridicule, dotting his satire of the ignorant rustic with numerous digressions into love, food, and flatulence.
