Dans ce contexte, associer les alliages d'aluminium, possédant un excellent ratio poids-résistance mécanique, à des procédés d'assemblage innovants présente un très fort intérêt. Le soudage par friction malaxage (Friction Stir Welding - FSW) est un de ces procédés d'assemblage innovants. Il permet notamment de souder des tôles d'alliage d'aluminium de nuances réputées à faible indice de soudabilité et dans des configurations similaires ou dissimilaires. Plusieurs configurations de soudage FSW ont été investiguées dans la littérature, mais la configuration FSW 2024-T3/2198-T8, très attrayante pour l'industrie aéronautique, n'a jamais été étudiée. Dans cette étude, une analyse expérimentale de cette configuration de soudage est proposée pour la première fois. L'influence de l'évolution des vitesses d'avance Va et de rotation Vr de l'outil sur l'évolution des caractéristiques des soudures est quantifiée. Dans la fenêtre process choisie, l'évolution de la thermique est principalement influencée par celle de la vitesse d'avance Va tandis que le ratio de vitesses R = Va/Vr est un bon indicateur de la physionomie des soudures, de la formation des défauts et des performances en traction. Le champ de dureté, les contraintes résiduelles, les distorsions et la tenue en corrosion des assemblages soudés sont quant à eux peu influencés par l'évolution des vitesses de soudage. Ces travaux ont permis de documenter la formation de défauts internes au sein des soudures, mais aussi de mettre en évidence la relation entre vitesses de soudage et performances en traction et enfin de proposer une hypothèse : la présence d'un phénomène de protection cathodique au sein des soudures.
