Book Description
Excerpt from Some Soldier Poets These essays are occasional. They are incomplete and tentative, as must be every reply to a fortuitous demand. I have not chosen my themes by any deep affinity or because I had a native bent for studying them, but because they were thrust before me and some Of my thoughts flocked out to meet each. I sketched characters based on analysis of work, not on information about authors, yet have since learned that some of these literary portraits seemed good likenesses to the friends of the man portrayed, and the friends of other poets have desired to see their literary Characters sketched by me. Young poets are Old-fashioned, like Nature herself; they have usually not yet acquired the professional desire to be in advance of the public. Nothing seems hackneyed to genius, and youth is perhaps half genius. What a work is not is always more Obvious than what it is, as critics are never weary of proving. I have tried to build with positive qualities, and to Obtain relief by laying on shadows lightly, as the best topographical draughtsmen did their pearly washes of diluted Indian ink. Book Description
Excerpt from Soldier Poets: Songs of the Fighting Men For one may claim that this volume represents the soldier as poet rather than the poet as soldier. It is typical of that intensification of feeling and concentration of expression developed by military service in the defence of country under extraordinary conditions which have yielded a surprising volume of fine poetry. "I know of no one to compare him to but the Archangel Michael" was said of the poet-paladin Roland. The noble Achilles of the West has to-day many brave peers who face battle with a song, Michaels and Rolands of civilization. Any objection that, since practically all men of active age have been drawn into the Army willy-nilly, the term "soldier poet" is ambiguous, has already been met. Even a cursory glance at this volume will show that the authors are soldiers whose military service dates back in most cases to the early days of the war, if not earlier, and not conscript poetasters who have found a new stimulant to jaded literary exercises. The note of pessimism and decadence is absent, together with the flamboyant and hectic, the morose and the mawkish. Book Description
Excerpt from More Songs by the Fighting Men: Soldier Poets We builded better than we knew when we issued the original volume as the climax of our proud association with the soldier poets it was a greater thing than we were then aware of. No literary work of our day has possessed so much genetic force or been of greater in uence. It was well said that Soldier Poets was of greater service to the Allied cause in America than many Blue Books and specially prepared statements: it showed the high clean spirit of ardent, generous youth engaged on a new Crusade. These songs before sunrise gave fresh vitality to poetry and were welcomed by a nation on the eve of rebirth as the promise of a greater intensity of living, a finer perception of beauty, a clearer vision of the undying Splendour after the weary days in which life and art had become dreary and meaningless to the multi tude. Now the birth-throes have become more severe, the spiritual quickening more accentuated, more and more of the poems are personal threnodies, and the sentinel graves of the Poetry Review young men who responded to the call in 1914 now consecrate the long line from Nieuport to Basra. They are a more glorious and more numerous company than the Elizabethans, with whom, in the great comradeship beyond the grave, they still march, an invisible army, with their brothers-in arms who continue the material and spiritual warfare here in the esh, inspiring and directing the fight that will not end with the war. Book Description
Excerpt from War Poems: 1861-1865 To the memory of Confederate soldiers, both dead and alive, I dedicate these pages. I cannot forget that our blood was given for what we all believed to be a righteous and holy cause. Let every one who reads this dedication do so with uncovered head, for holy thoughts are here. Many a lonely widow, and orphaned child now gray with the mist of time from 1861 to 1899 - will name some sleeping brave who has a part in this dedication, for they are all here represented, from the humblest private to Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
