Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training in the High School There is a widespread and' growing demand, in this country for manual training and industrial education. This demand is an effort to meet some of the fundamental educational needs of our school system and the social need for a larger number of intelligent trained workers for the industries. It has resulted in the teaching of a variety of the manual or mechanic arts and in the development of a number of systems of instruction. Almost all of the large cities in every State have spent large sums for buildings and equipment in order to meet the demand. The work in these centers is thoroughly organized, and the excellent results thus far attained have fully justified the large expenditures. In order to extend the benefits of instruction in manual train ing to more schools, legislation to encourage and assist schools undertaking this work, has been enacted in many of the States. Book Description
Excerpt from Industrial Education: A Guide to Manual Training The lessons in this volume were originally pre pared as a guide for the instructors and pupils in the Industrial department of the schools with which the authors are connected. A complete system of Manual Training having been organized and put in operation, it became necessary that it should be formulated for the convenience of the classes, and for the guidance of the instructors in charge of them. It was not supposed that there would be a demand for the publication of this course in Manual Train ing. But the subject of Industrial Education has been rapidly growing in the minds of teachers and others interested in the development and growth of educational methods. Inquiries came with increased frequency as to what was being done in the J ames town schools, and whether it was practicable to make Manual Training a feature of education in the public schools. It was thought best to make no reply until actual tests, in all the grades from the Primary to the High Schools, had been made. Second, the outline points the way to orderly procedure in teaching and emphasizes Principle as the basis of design, color and construction. Third, the outline furnishes material for informational and investigation work as well as material for construction work. Under informational instruction are classed those suggest ions which lead the pupil to make inquiries and to investigate for himself as in the making of specifications and the application of principles and proportion; also in the study of the materials which are used and in the attempted inquiries into the industrial significance and application of the things learned. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Arts for Vocational Ends The agitation of industrial education during the past few years has made all teachers of the manual arts in elementary and grammar grades, as well as in the high school, consider the question of the sufficiency of their subject and the efficiency of their teaching. If the manual arts were first introduced into the public schools for the purpose of making boys and girls more efficient, community workers and if, after twenty-five years of instruction in the manual arts, it is found that boys and. girls are still unable, when they leave school, to meet reasonable community demands, then something should be done to change this condition. Certainly the public schools should be held responsible for an education which will enable the youth of our land to perform a service upon leaving school immediately profitable both to themselves and to the community at large. If one is to receive a profitable return from a wage-earning occupation he must prepare particularly to do A what is required of those engaged in the occupation. A, vocational tendency, therefore, must obtain somewhere in the process of education. Inasmuch as the large majority of those at any time enrolled in the public schools must find a means of livelihood early in life, it is imperative that the public schools, even in the lower grades, offer an opportunity for vocational work. Book Description
This book is long overdue, especially in the fields of education, in general, and comparative education, in particular, anywhere in the world, where educational issues are reflected on, researched or written about. Unlike many current books on education having narrow perspectives, Sir Michael Sadler's approach to his contributions on educational issues and questions is eminently wide-angled. It also does justice to his dictum that as education is as broad as life, to call oneself an educational expert is to equate oneself with being an 'Expert on Life'! Sadler's thoughts and analyses are bafflingly of relevance for us today as educational policymakers or educational administrators, educators, politicians and statesmen. Besides the book's being a mine of thought-provoking information for academics, it is also an indispensable source of information for graduates, post-graduates, workers in national and international bodies (UNESCO) dealing with educational planning and assistance. This unprecedented publication underlines Sadler's unique educational scholarship both in content and style, expressed through an inimitable and felicitous English usage.
