Book Description
Excerpt from Some Contemporary Novelists (Women) This volume is neither a judgment, 3 com parison, nor a prophecy. I do not affirm that the writers treated represent completely the work of women in fiction to-day; I would not assert, dogmatically, that theirs is even the best contemporary work: I have no desire to anticipate the judgment of posterity. Book Description
Excerpt from Wit and Wisdom of Modern Women Writers: Selected and Arranged With Introductions This volume has been arranged to bring together passages from the best work, the most typical work of some of the women writers who are enriching our literature to-day. Such a selec tion between the covers of one small book must necessarily be far from exhaustive; but the quotations from each writer will at least serve to show the particular field which she has made her own. In like manner, the Intro ductions have been designed to indicate briefly the development of each author's thought, and the distinctiveness of her mental outlook. Book Description
Over the last decade, as Jane Austen has moved center-stage in our culture, onto best-seller lists and into movie houses, another figure has slipped into the spotlight alongside her. This is the "Janeite," the zealous reader and fan whose devotion to the novels has been frequently invoked and often derided by the critical establishment. Jane Austen has long been considered part of a great literary tradition, even legitimizing the academic study of novels. However, the Janeite phenomenon has not until now aroused the curiosity of scholars interested in the politics of culture. Rather than lament the fact that Austen today shares the headlines with her readers, the contributors to this collection inquire into why this is the case, ask what Janeites do, and explore the myriad appropriations of Austen--adaptations, reviews, rewritings, and appreciations--that have been produced since her lifetime. The articles move from the nineteenth-century lending library to the modern cineplex and discuss how novelists as diverse as Cooper, Woolf, James, and Kipling have claimed or repudiated their Austenian inheritance. As case studies in reception history, they pose new questions of long-loved novels--as well as new questions about Austen's relation to Englishness, about the boundaries between elite and popular cultures and amateur and professional readerships, and about the cultural work performed by the realist novel and the marriage plot. The contributors are Barbara M. Benedict, Mary A. Favret, Susan Fraiman, William Galperin, Claudia L. Johnson, Deidre Lynch, Mary Ann O'Farrell, Roger Sales, Katie Trumpener, and Clara Tuite.

"A trio of time-travelers land in Philadelphia's brutal totalitarian state of 2118. This 1919 classic was the first alternate-world fantasy, and H. P. Lovecraft hailed its author as among "the top grade of writers." Loaded with action and humor, the novel anticipates the work of Philip K. Dick. "A much-sought rarity." -- Analog"--

Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Women in Love: Sixty Twentieth-Century Masterpieces of Fiction Thus it is immediately apparent that the editors have not relied upon the inevitable bedside tales, the set-pieces, the hackneyed Stand-bys, which fill the conventional Treasuries with the (wet familiar. They have not included everything, or nearly everything they may have hoped to reprint. The Severe birth control exer cised by publishers makes it impossible to represent every author who might be worthy of inclusion. This anthology, like every other anthology, is a compromise between the complete and perfect compendium existing in the editor's mind and the com pilation permitted by the hydra-headed Ogres who control the permissions department in all the publishing houses. But it is equally obvious that the editors, with their own zcriteria and te markable rightness of choice, enrich the reader's experience. The skillfully condensed notes, the supplementary guides, the very division of the volume into two parts-the first of which might be classified as organized love, and the second (which is devoted to the perverse and insoluble problems) to What might be called disorganized love - add to one's comprehension. The stories contained in the book are more than stories. They are strange, sometimes secret, and.always revealing episodes Of life beneath the surface, beyond the event. In each case the editors go straight to the core; their labors consist not only In: selecting but in probing. Again and again they expose crucial Situations: the book is literally a series of contrasting climaxes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
