Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1782629947
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 450
Book Description
Many modern surface coatings and adhesives are derived from fossil feedstocks. With fossil fuels becoming more polluting and expensive to extract as supplies dwindle, industry is turning increasingly to nature, mimicking natural solutions using renewable raw materials and employing new technologies. Highlighting sustainable technologies and applications of renewable raw materials within the framework of green and sustainable chemistry, circular economy and resource efficiency, this book provides a cradle-to-cradle perspective. From potential feedstocks to recycling/reuse opportunities and the de-manufacture of adhesives and solvents, green chemistry principles are applied to all aspects of surface coating, printing, adhesive and sealant manufacture. This book is ideal for students, researchers and industrialists working in green sustainable chemistry, industrial coatings, adhesives, inks and printing technologies.

Solvent-Free Adhesives
Author: T.E. Rolando
Publisher: iSmithers Rapra Publishing
ISBN: 9781859571330
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 140
Book Description
Interest in solvent-free adhesives is increasing because of environmental concerns about the use of solvent containing adhesives and the subsequent need to decrease or eliminate solvent use. In this report adhesives are classified by the type of chemistry of the adhesive rather than the mode of application or the end-use. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database provides useful references for further reading.

Materials for Conservation
Author: C V Horie
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483182770
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 296
Book Description
Materials for Conservation: Organic Consolidants, Adhesives and Coatings provides an overview of one aspect of materials conservation treatment, particularly the properties of organic consolidants, adhesives, and coatings. The contents of the book are divided into two parts; these parts are background information and survey of polymers. The coverage of the first part includes polymer science and the uses and requirements of applied polymers. The second part covers resins, vinyl, thermoplastics, fillers, and colorants. The text will be most useful to individuals involved in the management and conservation of historic materials, such as museum curators. Materials engineer and polymer chemists will also benefit from the book.

Materials for Conservation
Author: Charles Velson Horie
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN:
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
The definitive introduction to the properties of materials used in conservation. It explains clearly the potentials and pitfalls of any proposed technique, providing a convenient summary of necessary information. The continual struggle of conservators to ameliorate the deterioration of objects has led to increasing use of synthetic polymers. These materials are part of the sophisticated technology that has been developed to augment and often replace traditional materials and methods. Conservators therefore have a wider range of techniques available. However, they must be able to appreciate the potentials and pitfalls of any proposed technique. This book provides, in a convenient form, a summary of necessary information. The first section explains physical and chemical properties which are important in the conservation process, i.e. application, ageing, reversal. The topics covered include molecular weight, glass transition temperature, solubility and solvents, polymerisation and degradation reactions. The second section provides detailed consideration of the individual materials, current and obsolete, used in conservation, drawing out the factors relevant to their effects on objects. The conservation uses of each material are summarised and referenced to allow further study. In five appendices, the properties of the polymers, solvents and their interactions are tabulated, with a list of suppliers and conversion table of physical units. IUPAC and SI nomenclature is used throughout the book. * Comprehensive coverage of material types used in conservation * Summarizes key information for each material * Includes both properties and effects of materials

Adhesives, Sealants, and Coatings for Space and Harsh Environments
Author: Lieng-Huang Lee
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461310474
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 523
Book Description
New technologies constantly generate new demands for exotic materials to be used in severe environments. The rapid developments of aerospace industries during the last two decades have required new materials to survive extreme high and low temperatures and various radiations. The exploration of new energy sources, e.g., solar and geothermal, has led us to develop new solar collectors and geothermal devices. Even the search for new oils has demanded that we study the corrosive environment of oil fields. In the telecommunication industries, optical fibers have been adopted broadly to replace metallic conductors. However, none of the optical fibers can survive abrasion or corrosion without the application of a coating material. For microelectronics, protection in terms of coatings and encapsulants is deemed necessary to prevent corrosion. One of the major causes of corrosion has been shown to be water which appears to be abundant in our earthly environments. Water can attack the bulk adhesive (or sealant), the interface, or the adherend. Water can also cause delamination of coating film, and it is definitely the major ingredient in causing cathodic or anodic corrosion. Thus, water becomes the major obstacle in solving durability problems of various materials in harsh environments.
