Book Description
Excerpt from Soils and Their Properties The recognition of the work done by micro-organisms marks a most important advance in our knowledge of the phenomena involved in the metabolism (gr. Metabole, change) of the' soil. Hitherto, investigation has been directed rather to the determination of the immediate effects of soil metabolism in pro'moting the nutrition of plants. But it is at least possible that the biological fac tors in metabolic activity may eventually be proved to be not less potent than the physical and chemical agents in effecting the disintegration of rocks, and thus in restoring to the soil those mineral ingredients which are undergoing incessant loss. Our knowledge of the biology of the soil is hardly yet in a sufficiently settled condition to be made the subject of an elementary manual. All that is attempted, there fore, In 'the following pages is to trace soils back to their parent rocks, to indicate some of their more important physical and chemical properties, and to give a brief account of the distribution Of soils within the British Isles. It is proposed to follow this Volume with another, in the same series, upon the practical management of the soil. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Some of the Physical Properties of Soil The behaviour of actual soils under known conditions has been made as far as possible the foundation of the conclusions drawn. A great mass of results has accumulated from the investigations made in the very numerous Agricultural Experiment Stations in Europe and America; with these results the agricultural teacher is too often unacquainted. His valid excuse is the scattered publication of the reports, and his want of time to correlate the several results recorded. The writer hopes that the publication of these lectures will stimulate others to labour in the abundant harvest field of Experiment Station Reports. It must ever be borne in mind that it is only on the results of experimental investigations that Agricultural Science can be safely built. The reader will probably be surprised that so little is said respecting English soils, and so much respecting the soils of America. The writer heartily wishes that this might have been otherwise. In fact, however, the physical constitution and properties of English soils have as yet not been investigated, save in a very few exceptional cases; this has been doubtless due to the great lack of investigators and research laboratories in this country. The general properties of soils can of course be equally well illustrated by any well studied examples, but the deficiency of knowledge of our own local soils is nevertheless a very real evil, and must greatly hinder the practical application of general principles. Book Description
Excerpt from The Organic Constituents of Soils The soil is not simple, but complex. The soil properties and functions are likewise complex, not simple. All of the investigators preceding me in this symposium have emphasized to you by their papers how complex the subject is and how much remains to be done before a clear insight is Obtained, but they have also shown to you clearly that a well-trained army of scientists is at work on the prob lems connected with soil fertility, applying. Thereto all the principles of modern science. The Old view was simplicity itself; the soil was a mere trough in which the plant found its nourishment. But I can do no better than to let Liebig speak for himself. I quote from Letter XII of his Familiar Letters on Chemistry A field in which we cultivate the same plant for several successive years becomes barren for that plant in a period varying with the nature of the soil; in one field it will be three, in another seven, in a third twenty, in a fourth a hundred years. One field bears wheat and no peas; another beans and turnips but no tobacco; a third gives a plentiful crop of turnips but will not bear clover. What is the reason that a field loses its fertility for one plant, the same which at first flourished there? What is the reason one kind of plant succeeds in a field where another fails? Book Description
Excerpt from The Physical Properties of Soils: A Laboratory Guide There are various ways of expressing the amount of water present in a soil: (1) as per cent of dry weight of the soil, (2) as per cent of wet weight, (3) as pounds per cubic foot, and (4) as surface inches. The water content is usually expressed either as per cent of dry weight or as pounds per cubic foot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Color of Soils The color of soils has long occupied the attention of both geologists and agriculturists and has considerable importance theoretically and practically. Theoretically the color is of importance as a guide to the origin and processes involved in the formation of the soil and as an indication of the relative age of any particular soil. It is of practical importance because it determines to a greater or less extent the absorption of the sun's energy, and is often a guide to the drainage conditions, to the crop adaptations, and to the cultural methods best suited to the soil. It is the object of this bulletin to publish the results of an investiga tion-into the causes of certain colors in soils, and particularly the causes of differences in color between the popularly named red and' yellow soils in connection with the agricultural significance of Such differences. In, addition to this, certain of the chemical and physical properties of iron compounds and their solutions will be considered It must be recognized that soil colors are not pure colors, but at best are Shades and tints. Thus the material by which soils ordinarily considered red are colored is ferric ox1de, which itself is never a pure red, for it varies from dark brown to yellowish, and when in the soil it is further tinted and Shaded by other materials. When applied to soils the color descriptions used in this bulletin mean the tints and shades which for the sake of Simplicity are termed red, yellow, brown black, or Simple combinations of these.
