Fin dai primissimi frammenti di questa densa silloge bilingue s'intuisce quanta verità racchiudano i versi semplici ed estremamente eleganti di Niccolò Leogrande, giovane autore fatto di mare e di vento che ha da sempre il cuore e l'anima spalancati al mondo per farci entrare dentro tutto… ma proprio tutto, da un petalo di prato a ogni atomo dell'universo. [...] Il viaggio è dunque lungo e articolato, ma alla fine ci si ritrova tutti qui con Niccolò Leogrande esattamente nello stesso punto da cui siamo partiti: quell'assurdo amore incondizionato per i poeti e per la poesia che ci fa sembrare l'esistenza una cosa normale. Una frase che una maestra di scuola elementare ripeteva come un mantra ai suoi genitori. Ma Niccolò, immatricolato in quel di Pisticci il 30 Marzo 1992 e cresciuto tra le calde spiagge e il mare azzurro di Taranto e i muretti a secco e i boschi della vicina Martina Franca, prima di trasferirsi a Londra per studiare architettura, letteratura e cinema, ha una dedizione per i dettagli. La sua attenzione per quelli della natura, della storia e delle civiltà antiche da piccolo, pian piano si sposta su quelli dell'animo umano da adolescente. Impressioni via via immortalate in disegni, quadri, fotografie e, soprattutto, scritti in versi. La produzione di oltre un centinaio di componimenti, sia in italiano che in lingua inglese, per la maggior parte realizzati tra gli anni del liceo e quelli dell'università, viene da lui stesso archiviata in un blog online (http://niccololeogrande.blogspot.com/), prima di inoltrarsi, poco più che ventenne, in una nuova fase della sua esistenza, a partire dalla quale si realizza un totale distacco dalla realtà. Dal 2013 si susseguono innumerevoli tentativi di riportare la sua essenza all'ordinarietà della vita, con l'unico fine di condurre a ragionevolezza umana il suo non comune modo di manifestarsi al mondo. Ma, oltre alla memoria dei suoi scritti, in molti dei quali sembra descrivere il processo di metamorfosi che sta sperimentando, la sua attuale interpretazione della vita fisica, in permanente condizione di leggerezza e lontananza dal mondo concreto, sono la migliore testimonianza di quella speciale sensibilità che caratterizza il pensatore. Quell'uomo che lui era solito identificare nella statua del suo poeta preferito, Arthur Rimbaud, titolata “L'homme aux semelles devant”: sospeso nell'aria, appunto. Probabilmente il suo migliore punto di osservazione della nostra esistenza terrena.

If Madame Bovary's death in Flaubert's 1857 novel marked the definitive end of the Romantic vision of literary disease, then the advent of psychoanalysis less than half a century later heralded an entirely new set of implications for literature dealing with illness. The theorization of a potential unconscious double (capable of expressing the body, and thus also the intimate damage caused by disease) in turn suggested a capacity to subvert or destabilize the text, exposing the main thread of the narrative to be unreliable or self-conscious. Indeed, the authors examined in this study (Italo Svevo (1861-1928), Giorgio Pressburger (1937-) and Giuliana Morandini (1938-)) all make use of individual 'infected' or suppressed voices within their texts which unfold through illness to cast doubt on a more (conventionally) dominant narrative standpoint. Applying the theories of Freud and more recent writings by Julia Kristeva, Bond offers a new critical reading of the literary function of illness, a function related to the very nature of narration itself.

This book explores the provenance of the so-called Berkeley Herm of Plato, a sculptural portrait that Stephen G. Miller first encountered over thirty years ago in a university storage basement. The head, languishing since its arrival in 1902, had become detached from the body, or herm, and had been labeled a fake. In 2002, while preparing another book, Miller—now an experienced archaeologist—needed an illustration of Plato, remembered this piece, and took another look. The marble, he recognized immediately, was from the Greek islands, the inscription appeared ancient, and the ribbons visible on the head were typical of those in Greek athletic scenes. The Berkeley Plato, rich in scientific, archaeological, and historical detail, tells the fascinating story of how Miller was able to authenticate this long-dismissed treasure. His conclusion, that it is an ancient Roman copy possibly dating from the time of Hadrian, is further supported by art conservation scientist John Twilley, whose essay appears as an appendix. Miller's discovery makes a significant contribution to the worlds of art history, philosophy, archaeology, and sports history and will serve as a starting point for new research in the back rooms of museums.

The present edited collection of essays on the Sicilian author Goliarda Sapienza includes contributions from established and emerging scholars working in the field of contemporary women’s writing.
