Work was performed under direct supervision of Mr. Thomas W. Richardson, Chief, CD; and under general supervision of Mr. Charles C. Calhoun, Jr Assistant Chief, and Dr. James R. Houston, Chief, cerc. A large portion of this report is based on field work conducted at Cleveland Harbor, Ohio. Work was funded by the Monitoring of Completed Coastal Projects (mccp) Program, a part of the Operations and Maintenance Program of usace. Mr. J. Michael Hemsley, of the Prototype Measurements and Analysis Branch (cd-p), CD, was the PI for the mccp Program. He provided valuable guidance for much of the early side-scan sonar work under the ngop Program and was responsible for including side-scan sonar applications in other projects. The authors wish to acknowledge the following other members of cd-p who provided information and example records on several projects Mr. Andrew Morang Calumet Harbor, Illinois, and Burns Harbor, Indiana. Book Description
A general introduction to side scan sonar (SSS) and its uses in coastal engineering studies is given, including some operating rules-of-thumb and suggestions based on the author's experience. There is also a section evaluating several systems currently on the market. SSS is a valuable tool for coastal engineering, with uses likely to multiply as the technology and our experience with it improve. However, quantitative applications are limited. Information on structure slopes, condition of individual armor units, and percent of units displaced (to name a few examples) is not currently measurable in a repeatable, quantitative way. Nevertheless, the semiquantitative sonograph record can be very informative, particularly to someone who has developed a familiarity with the structure or feature being viewed from repeated SSS surveys. It is a safer, and in many cases, superior alternative to visual inspection by divers, especially in murky water. Keywords: Coastal structure inspection; REMR(Repair, Evaluation, Maintenance, and Rehabilitation); Side scan sonar; Underwater inspection. (jhd).

Book Description
New geophysical techniques (multibeam echo sounding and 3D seismics) have revolutionized high-resolution imaging of the modern seafloor and palaeo-shelf surfaces in Arctic and Antarctic waters, generating vast quantities of data and novel insights into sedimentary architecture and past environmental conditions. The Atlas of Submarine Glacial Landforms is a comprehensive and timely summary of the current state of knowledge of these high-latitude glacier-influenced systems. The Atlas presents over 180 contributions describing, illustrating and discussing the full variability of landforms found on the high-latitude glacier-influenced seafloor, from fjords and continental shelves to the continental slope, rise and deep-sea basins beyond. The distribution and geometry of these submarine landforms provide key information on past ice-sheet extent and the direction and nature of ice flow and dynamics. The papers discuss individual seafloor landforms, landform assemblages and entire landsystems from relatively mild to extreme glacimarine climatic settings and on timescales from the modern margins of tidewater glaciers, through Quaternary examples to ancient glaciations in the Late Ordovician.

Book Description
The Handbook provides a detailed evaluation of what can realistically be achieved by remote sensing in an operational coastal management context. It takes the user through the planning and implementation of remote sensing projects from the setting of realistic objectives, deciding which imagery will be most appropriate to achieve those objectives, the acquisition, geometric and radiometric correction of imagery, the field survey methods needed to ground-truth the imagery and guide image classification, the image processing techniques required to optimise outputs, through the image interpretation and evaluation of the accuracy of outputs. Linked to the Handbook is a computer-based remote sensing distance-learning module: Applications of satellite and airborne image data to coastal management available free of charge via www.unesco.bilko.org

Book Description
This book focuses on the survey technology, post-processing technology, mapping technology and scientific application of the submarine topography and geomorphology in detail. High-resolution submarine geomorphology is a frontier branch of marine geology and marine surveying and mapping, which provides a direct basis to study the seabed surface, to understand the tectonic movement and submarine evolution. In the past two decades, high-resolution submarine geomorphology with high-precision multi-beam echo sounding, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiler as the major techniques, is developing very quickly and is one of the frontiers of international marine science and technology. These high techniques promote the traditional submarine geomorphology to high-resolution and quantitative research. At present, high-resolution submarine geomorphology is widely used in the delimitation of the continental shelf, the international seabed resources survey, marine engineering and marine military applications. In order to facilitate readers to understand how to acquire and apply scientific research based on submarine topographic data, it highlights the combination of theory, technology and scientific application. This book is useful as a reference for professional and technical personnel in related fields and also as a textbook for both graduate and undergraduate students as well.
